India's Fuel Shield: Minister Puri Confirms Domestic Prices Held Steady Despite Global Crude Volatility

Stabilizing Consumer Burden Against Global Oil Market Chaos

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri asserted that domestic petrol and diesel prices have not seen a significant increase, even amidst extreme volatility in international crude oil markets. Addressing the media in Sonbhadra, Puri stressed that government intervention has successfully protected consumers from excessive price hikes. He stated that if viewed in real terms, there has been no material rise in fuel costs across the country.

Puri pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had implemented successive reductions in central excise duty (in November 2021 and May 2022, as well as recently). These duties mean the government itself is currently bearing a burden estimated at around ₹10 per litre for both petrol and diesel.

Responding to questions regarding potential future price reductions amid softer global crude prices, the minister noted that India's fuel increase was limited to only ₹7.60. He further contextualized this stability by comparing current rates with those prevalent during the Russia-Ukraine conflict starting in 2022, claiming there has been no rise compared to that period.

Market Pressure and Future Price Softening Potential

The Minister revealed that market mechanisms are currently absorbing significant stress. Due to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, oil marketing companies are reportedly incurring losses amounting to approximately ₹1,000 crore per day. Puri affirmed, however, that the government ensured this strain was not transferred to consumers.

He elaborated on the future price trajectory, mentioning that some companies currently hold inventories of crude purchased at higher prices. According to Puri, there is a clear possibility of fuel prices softening once lower-priced crude reaches refiners, allowing for necessary adjustments in the market.

Economic Trajectory and Regional Growth Highlights

While addressing fuel stability, Puri also detailed India's significant economic advancements under the current administration. He highlighted that India’s economy is expanding rapidly, with the nation advancing towards becoming the world's third-largest economy.

Puri noted a historical shift in scale, observing that when Modi took office in 2014, India was the world's 11th largest economy; it is now recognized as a USD 4-trillion economy. Focusing on local metrics, he mentioned that Sonbhadra’s per capita income has risen from ₹43,000 in 2018 to roughly ₹1.2 lakh currently.

Furthermore, the minister noted that Uttar Pradesh has become a major center of economic and industrial growth. The state's gross domestic product rose dramatically from approximately ₹13 lakh crore in 2016-17 to nearly ₹36 lakh crore. initiatives such as One District One Product (ODOP) have contributed to the creation of over nine lakh government jobs in the state.
