Maruti Suzuki Launches India's First Flex-Fuel Car, Aiding National Energy Security
New Delhi, 04 June 2026: Maruti Suzuki India Limited introduced India's first flex-fuel car on the eve of World Environment Day. The launch was held in the presence of Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, and Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. The company unveiled this innovation in alignment with national energy security and sustainability goals. Maruti Suzuki is introducing flex-fuel technology to its Wagon R model, a brand that has long pioneered alternate fuel vehicles in India, including CNG and LPG. This flexibility allows customers to run the vehicle on any blend of ethanol and petrol, ranging from E20 to E100.
The introduction of this technology carries significant national benefits, promising a reduction in oil imports and providing assistance to farmers by boosting their incomes.
Speaking at the event, Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of biofuels like ethanol as a path to reducing dependence on crude oil while strengthening the rural economy. He stated that flex-fuel vehicles can create a strong and sustainable demand for ethanol, ultimately benefiting the industry, farmers, and the environment, thereby supporting the Government’s vision of clean and self-reliant mobility.
Shri Hardeep Singh Puri added that India's transition toward ethanol is unstoppable. Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he noted how farmers have been transformed from 'annadatas' to 'urjadatas', strengthening India's energy security. He described flex-fuel vehicles as a win-win for the nation—reducing crude oil import dependence, saving foreign exchange, lowering emissions, and creating opportunities for rural prosperity.
Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, committed that the company aims to offer cars equipped with multiple technologies and fuels. He mentioned that Maruti Suzuki is introducing BEVs, Hybrids, CNG/CBG, and ethanol flex-fuel vehicles to address India's goals of reducing oil import and carbon emissions. Mr. Takeuchi acknowledged that the ecosystem for ethanol as a fuel in India is still nascent, stating that as a market leader, it is their responsibility to contribute to making "India Go Flex." He concluded that once mainstream adoption is reached, flex-fuel vehicles have the potential to cut oil imports, reduce carbon emissions and local air pollution while improving domestic value addition and farmer incomes.
