India Post Shatters Records: Q1 Revenue Crosses ₹4,000 Crores as Transformation Accelerates

The Department of Posts achieved a historic milestone in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, reporting revenue exceeding ₹4,000 crores. This massive achievement underlines the successful business transformation efforts underway at India Post, signaling a strong and positive trajectory for the postal network under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision.

The Department convened its Quarterly Business Review Meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Union Minister of Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. The meeting brought together Heads of Postal Circles across the country to review performance against ambitious national targets and deliberate on the future roadmap for the evolving postal business.

Q1 Performance Highlights: Revenue and Target Achievement

India Post registered ₹4,009 crore in revenue during Q1 FY 2026-27. This figure reflects a significant 22% year-on-year growth compared to the corresponding period of FY 2025-26. The achievement stands at 81% against the quarterly target set at ₹4,951 crore.

While Q1 performance is robust, the Department still has an annual revenue target of ₹19,803 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27, making every quarter critical for sustained growth. The milestone serves as a testament to the dedication and relentless efforts of employees nationwide in modernizing service delivery.

Key Drivers Across Business Verticals

The performance review covered six core business verticals: Mails, Parcels, Postal Life Insurance/Rural Postal Life Insurance (PLI/RPLI), Post Office Savings Bank (POSB), International Relations & Global Business (IR&GB), and Citizen Centric Services (CCS). This comprehensive portfolio reflected broad-based growth across the entire department.

Citizen Centric Services (CCS) led the pack, recording the highest year-on-year growth at 86%. Parcel services followed with a strong 50% growth, while Mails saw an increase of 42%. IR&GB and PLI/RPLI also demonstrated solid progress, registering 34% and 20% growth, respectively.

The overall Q1 performance saw Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal emerge as the top three performing Postal Circles nationwide. Best-performing circles were also identified across specific verticals, such as Bihar (121%) in Parcel and Chhattisgarh (124%) in POSB.

Operational Efficiency and Financial Health Improvement

The Union Minister noted remarkable improvements in operational efficiency across the postal network. A key indicator of this success was the sharp reduction in Branch Post Offices (BOs) reporting Nil Business Transactions (NBT).

In Q1 FY 2026-27, the number of NBT BOs declined by over 92% in POSB and nearly 97% in PLI/RPLI. This strong field-level business mobilization was lauded by the Union Minister. All Circles were directed to sustain this momentum through focused monitoring and enhanced customer outreach.

In terms of financial sustainability, the Expenditure Coverage Ratio (ECR) showed continued improvement. ECR improved from 28% to 32% when factoring in pensions. Excluding pension costs, the ECR rose from 41% to 47%. The strong performance of Delhi, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh was specifically commended for their contribution to improving this ratio.

Strategic Directions and Future Focus Areas

While celebrating the record-breaking quarter, Shri Scindia emphasized that focused interventions are necessary in the remaining quarters. He stressed that the Parcel, Mail, and IR&GB business verticals require intensified efforts for customer acquisition and institutional engagement.

The Union Minister introduced a strategic clustering approach, grouping states into three clusters to facilitate targeted interventions and knowledge sharing. Both Minister Scindia and Minister of State Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani lauded the transformative impact of focused leadership and systematic monitoring.

Dr. Pemmasani urged all Postal Circles to ensure disciplined execution and continuous effort. He stressed that consistent performance across every Circle is crucial not only for achieving ambitious revenue targets but also for further strengthening India Post's public outreach.
