India Dominates Global Retail GCC Market: Country Boasts 180 Hubs and Leads AI Adoption in FMCG Sector

India Solidifies Position as World's Largest Retail GCC Hub

India has emerged as the undisputed global leader in retail and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Global Capability Centres (GCCs). A new report released by TeamLease Digital on July 8 highlights that 180 such GCCs are now operational across the country. These centers employ approximately 272,300 professionals dedicated to serving global retail giants.

The scale of this market in India is significantly outpacing other major economies. The retail GCC market size in India currently exceeds that of Poland, the Philippines, Mexico, Germany, and Egypt combined by 34 percent. This massive growth trajectory solidifies India's leadership in the international business services landscape.

Accelerating Growth Driven by Global Retail Giants

The expansion is fueled not only by American retailers but also a growing presence from international players. Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital, noted that European companies are increasingly establishing operations in India. Furthermore, there is notable demand emerging from Japanese and South Korean retail conglomerates.

Beyond the sheer volume of talent, the appeal of India for these multinational corporations is multifaceted. As Ms. Sharma pointed out, business-friendly policies, available tax incentives, relatively low infrastructure costs, and robust government support mechanisms have all encouraged companies to set up shop in India.

Operational Structure: Focus on Nano GCCs Across Key Cities

Of the 180 retail and FMCG GCCs operating in India, approximately 130 are categorized as nano GCCs. These smaller centers typically employ between 200 and 250 professionals each.

These critical micro-hubs are strategically distributed across major metropolitan areas including Bengaluru, Mumbai, the National Capital Region, Pune, and Hyderabad. Crucially, these centers are also reaching out to tier-II and tier-III cities such as Mangaluru, indicating a widespread distribution of capability building.

Looking ahead, there is significant potential for expansion within this structure. It is estimated that 60-70 percent of existing nano centers are set to expand their workforce and operations over the coming years. Major global firms operating in these hubs include Lowe's, Tesco, H&M, Walmart Global Tech, Target, L'Oréal, and AB InBev.

AI Adoption Puts India Ahead of International Rivals

India is also leading its peers in the adoption rate of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the retail GCC sector. The report indicates that AI penetration currently stands at 5-7 percent among the retail GCC workforce. This places India ahead of all other major markets analyzed, including Germany.

However, despite strong AI market presence, specialized expertise remains concentrated. Across the 180 GCCs, only about 320 professionals possess more than eight years of experience in AI. This calculates to fewer than two senior AI specialists per center on average.

Talent Demand and Future Job Projections

The demand for skilled labor within retail GCCs is rapidly escalating, particularly concerning Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. Hiring demand across these centers has nearly doubled between 2024 and 2025, creating over 52,000 job opportunities in the last year alone.

In terms of function, Technology, customer success, and supply chain roles currently constitute around 60 percent of the retail GCC workforce. These three functions are projected to generate more than 80 percent of all hiring demand by 2028. Specifically, technology and engineering roles are anticipated to grow from about 25,100 positions in 2025 to 41,000 by 2028.

Key Hubs for Technology and AI Expertise

The geographic distribution of high-level talent is concentrated in specific cities. Bengaluru accounts for a significant portion at 54 percent of the retail GCC AI talent pool and remains the anchor for advanced global mandates. Hyderabad is rapidly establishing itself as the strongest secondary hub for AI expertise, while Pune is developing into a complementary engineering center.

These specialized roles are also highly rewarding financially. Ms. Sharma noted that professionals possessing core AI and technology skills are commanding salaries that are 50-60 percent higher compared to those offered for comparable conventional roles within the sector.
