Incident at NHPC Teesta VI HE Project Causing Casualties in Sikkim​

An unfortunate incident occurred at the underconstruction site of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, located in Samardung, South Sikkim. The incident took place on July 20, 2026, at 1.04 P.M.

The project suffered an explosion inside the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) after suspected methane gas trapped or embedded within the rocks suddenly burst, leading to the generation of dense fumes and toxic gases.

Upon the incident, the project team immediately activated its emergency response protocols. The rescue operations are ongoing and involve close coordination with various agencies, including the district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local authorities, and a special rescue team from DG Mines-Safety.

NHPC's Top Management has reached the site to coordinate efforts with rescue teams and local authorities. Site engineering teams are working around the clock to stabilize the tunnel environment and assist with the rescue mission.

As of the latest information received from the site, 25 personnel were trapped inside the tunnel. Currently, 10 casualties have been reported.

NHPC is committed to providing full support to all rescue agencies as well as the affected families during this difficult time. A detailed investigation will be conducted in due course to ascertain the cause of the incident.
