Hindalco Commissions India's First Superfine PPT ATH Plant, Boosting Self-Reliance in Cable Fire Safety

Hindalco Industries Limited, a metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned a new greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka. This facility marks a significant milestone, as it represents the first domestic production of this high-value specialty alumina product in India.

The new plant has an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes. This strategic addition strengthens Hindalco's Specialty Alumina portfolio and advances India's objectives for self-reliance in critical fire safety applications. Furthermore, the facility is notable as the world's only specialty alumina plant to operate entirely on renewable energy, setting a global standard for sustainable manufacturing.

PPT ATH is a critical, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in diverse applications, including Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites, and paints. In the cable industry, it functions to suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, thereby supporting safer electrical and infrastructure systems.

Meeting Growing Industry Demand

The demand for such materials is increasing due to rising EV adoption, infrastructure development, and the global shift towards sustainable, high-performance materials. The industry standards are also evolving, with BIS introducing IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables to align Indian standards with international safety benchmarks.

The initial 30,000 tonnes per annum capacity is designed to meet nearly the entire domestic demand for safer cables from the wire and cable industry, which is crucial for material self-sufficiency. The facility is designed for future expansion up to 60,000 tonnes, allowing Hindalco to scale capacity in alignment with market growth.

Focus on Innovation and Sustainability

Saurabh Khedekar, CEO of Alumina Business at Hindalco Industries, stated that the addition of Superfine PPT ATH reinforces the company's focus on innovation-led growth. He added that the InnoSafe solution enhances fire safety by retarding flame spread and suppressing smoke, enabling safer and more sustainable infrastructure. As India's first manufacturer of Superfine Precipitated Hydrate, the company offers an indigenous solution that reduces import dependence and supports the wire and cable industry.

The facility is the result of Hindalco's 'flask-to-factory' innovation journey, utilizing technology and R&D developed in-house. It features a fully integrated manufacturing ecosystem and automated controls for critical processes, ensuring stringent control over product consistency and feedstock quality.

Sustainability is a key differentiator of the plant. The PPT ATH is produced at Hindalco's Belagavi refinery, which reported a GHG intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina for the Year-to-Date FY26. The production is powered by 100% renewable energy sourced from biomass, solar, and wind power, allowing the production of high-performance specialty materials with a low environmental footprint.

Hindalco's Specialty Alumina Portfolio

Hindalco Industries Limited, a $31 billion metals powerhouse, is India's leading producer of Specialty Alumina, offering over 120 grades of non-metallurgical specialty alumina. This portfolio serves various industries including refractories, ceramics, railway, batteries, electronics, and water treatment.

The products, engineered to deliver critical performance attributes such as flame retardancy, electrical insulation, and durability, support over 1,000 customers across 42 countries. The introduction of Superfine PPT ATH further expands Hindalco's offerings into advanced flame-retardant applications, complementing its existing specialty alumina grades used in power and communication cables and display glass manufacturing.
