Government Moves to Create Sector-Specific Data Trusts for Indigenous AI Development
The government is actively considering a pilot project to establish sector-specific data trusts at IIT Hyderabad. This initiative aims to address the critical need for high-quality, secure Indian datasets required for advancing artificial intelligence development in India.Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this plan during an interaction with industry leaders in Hyderabad on August 11. The proposal for setting up these data trusts emerged directly from discussions held with various industry representatives.
Minister Vaishnaw welcomed the concept, stating that the government could initiate a pilot program at IIT Hyderabad in partnership with relevant industries. These data trusts are designed to securely host and manage sector-specific Indian datasets.

Under the framework of the proposed data trusts, all datasets would be managed with clearly defined usage policies. The ultimate goal is ensuring responsible and secure access while promoting technological growth.These high-value datasets will be made accessible to startups, research institutions, and companies that are developing novel AI applications. Rise of Electronics Manufacturing and Exports
Beyond the focus on AI infrastructure, Minister Vaishnaw also provided an update on the impressive growth trajectory of India's electronics manufacturing sector. He highlighted that production in this segment has crossed Rs 13 lakh crore.This significant milestone reflects India's evolving role in global technology supply chains. Electronics has now become India's third-largest export category.
Moreover, mobile phones have emerged as the country's largest individual export product. These figures underscore India's emergence as a trusted global hub for manufacturing and advanced technology production.
