New Delhi witnessed a major affirmation of its growing status as a global innovation leader on Sunday. Union Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted substantial growth in India's patent filing activity. The data confirms a remarkable increase, signaling a robust and confident economic trajectory for the nation.The Ministry data reveals that patent filings reached a historic high of 1.43 lakh in the financial year 2025-26. This marks a significant escalation of 30.2 per cent compared to the preceding year.
Domestic Dominance Drives Patent Surge in FY26
The surge is heavily underpinned by domestic contributions, as highlighted by the Minister. Over 69 per cent of the total patent filings recorded in FY26 were generated within India.Specific figures show that India registered 1,43,729 patent filings in FY26. This is a marked increase from the 1,10,375 filings recorded in FY25. Domestic filings contributed 98,771 filings, substantially up from the 68,201 recorded in the previous year.
Key Growth Drivers Powering India's IP Landscape
Multiple sectors are fueling this impressive expansion in intellectual property creation. The role of educational institutions is particularly prominent, accounting for 36.5 per cent of all filings.Furthermore, the Minister pointed to the increased contribution from startups, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and public research and development bodies. This shows a broad-based commitment to innovation across the economy.
Geographically, Tamil Nadu emerged as a leading hub for innovation activity with 22,995 filings. Karnataka and Maharashtra also feature prominently among the major innovation centers.
India Rises to Global Ranking of Sixth Largest Patent Filer
India's global standing in the realm of innovation has notably improved. According to data aligned with the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the country is now ranked as the sixth-largest patent filer globally.This achievement underscores the sustained momentum in the nation's intellectual property ecosystem. It represents the eighth consecutive year of growth in patent filings.
Digital Transformation Streamlines Patent Filing Process
The modernization of the filing process is key to this structural shift. Nearly 95 per cent of all patent applications are now filed online. This efficiency boost is directly attributable to the government's efforts under the IP India initiative.The data points to a powerful narrative shift, with the "Made in India" initiative increasingly complemented by "Invented in India."
Charting the Five-Year Trajectory of Indian Patents
Examining the longer-term trend reveals sustained, aggressive growth in patent activity. Over a five-year span, India's patent filings have climbed by an impressive 146 per cent.The filings increased from 58,503 in FY21 to reach the 1,43,729 figure in FY26. This consistent upward trajectory confirms a deep-rooted, structural strengthening of the country’s innovation framework.
