Ratlami Sev Gains Global Recognition as MP Promotes GI Tag

Ratlam, March 23 – Madhya Pradesh’s Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Chetan Kumar Kashyap, has urged entrepreneurs to maximize the use of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and actively promote Ratlami Sev products in both national and international markets.

The crispy fried snack, originating from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, received its GI tag in 2014 and was successfully renewed in 2024. This certification confirms the product’s unique origins and highlights its distinctive qualities, safeguarding its authenticity and promoting regional heritage.

Addressing the One District One Product (ODOP) summit in Ratlam on Sunday, Minister Kashyap emphasized the need to ensure Ratlami Sev products meet world-class standards, building upon the snack’s established reputation. He stated that the ODOP scheme aims to globally promote the district's traditional products through GI tags, branding, and targeted marketing.

The Madhya Pradesh government has already successfully positioned products like Ratlami Sev, Shivpuri’s jackets, and Morena’s gajak as state signature products. Minister Kashyap noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted Ratlami Sev, contributing to its international recognition.

He underscored the government’s commitment to supporting local enterprises, citing Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s efforts to accelerate industrial development through the recognition of local products and streamlined industrial policies. The Minister encouraged entrepreneurs to engage in advancing the Ratlami Sev business, assuring government support in this endeavor.

The event included the honoring of Shailendra Gandhi, who secured the GI tag for Ratlami Sev. A digital presentation detailed the product’s origin, development journey, characteristics, historical and commercial significance, marketing strategies, and logistical considerations.

Minister Kashyap highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster Madhya Pradesh’s industrial sector, noting that agriculture currently contributes 30 to 40 percent to the state’s GDP, while industry accounts for 20 percent. The government is actively working to increase the industry’s contribution through regional industry conferences designed to attract local and foreign investors, strengthening the state’s regional identity and fostering multifaceted industrial development.
