FPIs Reverse Four-Month Plunge: Foreign Investors Pump ₹20,200 Crore into Indian Equities
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have returned to the Indian stock market in July, halting a prolonged four-month period of capital outflows. Net foreign investment in equities amounted to approximately ₹20,200 crore during the month. This significant reversal signals renewed appetite for domestic stocks, buoyed by attractive valuations and improving corporate earnings expectations.Reversing Months of Aggressive Outflows
The July inflow stands in stark contrast to the aggressive selling observed in previous months. FPIs had withdrawn substantial capital from Indian shares over the last quarter. They pulled out ₹60,847 crore in April, followed by ₹32,963 crore in May, and a sharp reduction of ₹49,340 crore in June. March saw an even steeper outflow of ₹1.17 lakh crore.Despite this positive July reversal, the cumulative foreign investor position remains subdued. Foreign investors have withdrawn a net ₹2.54 lakh crore from Indian equities year-to-date so far in 2026. This accumulated outflow already exceeds the total withdrawal figure of ₹1.66 lakh crore recorded during the entirety of 2025.
Why Global Investors are Reconsidering India
Market watchers suggest that India's comparative stability, coupled with increasingly reasonable valuations across large-cap stocks, has begun to regain global investor confidence. The recovering trend in corporate earnings is also playing a supportive role in reversing sentiment decline.V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, highlighted that heightened volatility in markets such as South Korea and Taiwan may be encouraging foreign investors to pivot towards relatively stable economies like India. He added that the rupee's stability and fair valuations within India's large-cap segment have bolstered the return of foreign capital.
Corporate Earnings Drive Stock Sector Re-rating
Improved earnings expectations present another significant tailwind for the market. Vedant Gupte, Co-Founder and CEO of investment platform Trackk, noted that June quarter results indicated early recovery signs across several key sectors. This sentiment strengthened investor confidence significantly.Information technology stocks experienced a strong re-rating due to better-than-expected earnings. Gupte stated these results helped alleviate concerns regarding the potential long-term impact of artificial intelligence on the industry's growth trajectory.
Supportive Global Macro Environment
Global macroeconomic conditions have also started becoming more conducive for emerging markets like India. According to Gupte, reduced pressure concerning the US dollar and expectations that American interest rates might be near their peak have improved the investment backdrop for Indian equities. The renewed foreign interest extended into the debt market as well. FPIs invested ₹29,212 crore in Indian debt securities via the general route during July. An additional flow of ₹3,033 crore moved through the fully accessible route.
Future Catalysts and Investor Vigilance
The continuation of this foreign buying trend depends on a mix of domestic market developments and global risk factors. Investors must closely monitor crude oil prices and the trajectory of ongoing US-Iran geopolitical tensions, according to Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President-Research at Bajaj Broking. On the home front, the Q1FY27 earnings season is anticipated to be a critical market trigger. Furthermore, the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision scheduled for August 5 will receive intense scrutiny from investors.
While the July reversal offers relief after months of heavy foreign selling, the cumulative outflows in 2026 indicate that global investors have not yet fully restored their confidence in Indian equities. Future flows hinge on earnings momentum strengthening and global uncertainty continued easing.
