Five Senior Citizen Homes Inaugurated Across India; Govt Pledges Inter-generational Support via New Schemes
The government has significantly bolstered its commitment to the dignity and well-being of senior citizens through comprehensive initiatives under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY). These nationwide programs were organized by the Department in commemoration of International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2025. The efforts underscore a sustained push toward creating an age-friendly society, ensuring that older citizens can participate actively in community life.Expanding Institutional Care and Partnerships
A key component of this commitment is the infrastructure expansion and collaborative strengthening of welfare initiatives. Five new Senior Citizen Homes were virtually inaugurated across five states: Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. These homes significantly expand institutional care and support networks for elderly citizens nationwide.Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed with the Birla Open Minds Foundation. This partnership aims to promote collaborative initiatives dedicated to the welfare and empowerment of senior citizens. The department reaffirms its commitment by working in convergence with state governments, autonomous bodies, and civil society organizations.
Fostering Inter-generational Bonding through Innovation
Recognizing the importance of family ties and societal connection, the Department introduced several innovative programs designed to promote meaningful interaction between younger and older generations. "Naitik Patham," an interactive educational game, was launched specifically to strengthen these familial bonds.A QR Code-based initiative was also introduced to facilitate Grandparents-Teachers Meetings. This aims to foster greater involvement of senior citizens in the educational development and progress of children. These celebrations included dedicated inter-generational bonding programs held across six cities: Jabalpur, Badaun, Chhatarpur, Navgaon, Biaora, and Mount Abu.
Health and Legal Awareness Campaigns
The government placed special emphasis on ensuring seniors are aware of their legal rights and maintain good health. A focused session was organized in collaboration with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). This program educated citizens regarding the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The goal is to ensure that families and communities fulfill their responsibilities towards elderly members. To promote healthy and active ageing, sessions were conducted in collaboration with S-VYASA, Bengaluru. These programs included dedicated yoga sessions and health camps for the senior citizen community. A cultural event titled "Aradhana" was also organized to celebrate the immense contribution of senior citizens to society.
