Fire Incident at HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Leads to Postponement of Dedication Ceremony
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) reported an unfortunate fire incident at its Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL) facility on April 20, 2026. The incident occurred within the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) section of the refinery.Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by a leakage of hydrocarbons through one of the valves or flanges located in the heat exchanger circuit.
HPCL confirmed that the fire was confined and localized within the heat exchangers stack of the CDU. Operational safety measures were swiftly implemented, leading to the quick isolation of the CDU, Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU), and all other units within the CDU section. Company representatives noted that all units remain structurally safe and unaffected, and no other section of the refinery has suffered any impact.
The fire was promptly brought under control by the emergency response team deployed at HRRL. Authorities reported no loss of life or injury to any personnel involved.
Following the incident, the scheduled dedication of the refinery by the Prime Minister on April 21, 2026, has been postponed. A revised date for the ceremony will be announced in due course.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and to ensure necessary remedial measures are undertaken. While the financial and operational impact is currently being assessed, it was reported that, on the surface, the impact is not expected to be material.
