FII Inflows Propel Gains as Indices Dip; FCNR-B Deposits Surge Reflecting Forex Strength
Foreign and Domestic Investor Flows in Market
Provisional exchange data reveals a contrasting picture between foreign and domestic institutional investors (FIIs and DIIs) on August 4. FIIs continued their buying momentum, injecting Rs 2,446.47 crore into the markets after purchasing shares worth Rs 15,630.45 crore against sales of Rs 13,183.98 crore.Conversely, DIIs registered a net outflow, selling equities amounting to Rs 16,177.53 crore against purchases of Rs 15,241.39 crore, resulting in an outflow of Rs 936.14 crore. This marks the second consecutive session where foreign investors showed a buying streak.
Year-to-Date Trends and Market Performance
While daily flows varied, the year-to-date trends show more complexity. FIIs remain net sellers for the year, having withdrawn approximately Rs 3.39 lakh crore from Indian equities. Meanwhile, DIIs have provided consistent support to domestic markets, infusing nearly Rs 4.92 lakh crore into the equities market since the beginning of the year.Indian benchmark indices ended lower on August 4, snapping a four-session winning streak amid broad profit booking across most sectors. The BSE Sensex declined by 456.38 points, or 0.58%, settling at 77,888.61. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty 50 fell 137.75 points, or 0.57%, concluding the session at 24,043.55.
Sectoral Trends and Global Economic Indicators
Profit booking weighed heavily on the broader market sectors, with nearly all sectoral indices ending in the red. Only the Media and Metal sectors registered gains for the day. Nifty Midcap 100 closed down 0.3%, while Nifty Smallcap 100 managed a modest gain of 0.2%.In global developments, Brent crude saw a significant rise, climbing nearly 2.5% to around $85 a barrel amid uncertainties surrounding the US-Iran conflict. This inflationary pressure adds complexity to the domestic market sentiment.
Analyst Outlook and Forex Stability
Analysts suggest that Indian equities are poised for a gradual upmove in the medium term. This potential growth is supported by favourable global cues, solid domestic macroeconomic indicators, and encouraging corporate earnings visibility.Investors are advised to closely monitor crucial upcoming data points, including the US jobs report and the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision scheduled for Wednesday. Furthermore, UK and US composite and services PMI readings will offer additional guidance on market direction.
Reflecting strong participation in the RBI's special scheme aimed at attracting foreign currency inflows, Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR-B) deposits surged by $28 billion between June 5 and July 30, bolstering India's forex reserves.
