Iran Warns US Against Ground Invasion as War With Israel Enters Seventh Day
Iranian Foreign Minister Says US Military Action on Ground Would Be “Disastrous”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned the United States that a ground invasion of Iran would result in serious consequences for the American military. His remarks come as the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States continues to escalate, entering its seventh day on Friday. The war began on February 28 when Israel and the United States carried out a joint military operation targeting Iran. The attack resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Speaking to NBC News, Araghchi said Iran is prepared to respond if American forces attempt a ground invasion.
“We are waiting for them to invade us. We are confident that we can confront the American military in a ground invasion, and it will be a big disaster for them,” Araghchi said.
Conflict Expands Across the Region
The ongoing war has affected at least 14 additional countries across the Middle East and nearby regions, raising concerns about wider instability. On March 5, Azerbaijan accused Iran of launching drone attacks against its territory. Tehran denied the allegation. Araghchi clarified that Iran’s military actions were aimed at American targets rather than neighboring countries.
“We did not attack our neighbors. We have not attacked Muslim countries. We have attacked American targets, American bases and installations which are unfortunately located on our neighbors’ soil,” Araghchi told NBC News.
Maritime Incident Raises Tensions
Araghchi also accused the US Navy of committing what he described as an “atrocity at sea” after an Iranian naval vessel was sunk earlier in the week.According to Iranian officials, the US Navy sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, killing at least 87 people. Sri Lankan authorities said 32 crew members were rescued from the vessel.
The Iranian foreign minister said the ship had been carrying nearly 130 crew members and warned that the United States would regret its actions.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” Araghchi said in a social media statement.
The vessel had been returning from a naval exercise hosted by the Indian Navy, which was also attended by the United States.
Rising Casualties and Regional Impact
Since the conflict began on February 28, the war has caused significant casualties across multiple countries.Officials reported that at least 1,230 people have been killed in Iran. More than 100 deaths have been recorded in Lebanon, while around a dozen people have died in Israel. Six US troops have also been killed during the fighting.
Iran’s attacks have affected its Arab neighbors and disrupted key infrastructure across the region.
Oil Trade and Air Travel Disruptions
The conflict has also affected global energy markets and transportation routes.Several ships have been attacked in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz since the war began. The strait is a critical maritime route that carries roughly one fifth of the world’s oil shipments.
These disruptions have contributed to a surge in oil prices and interruptions to global air travel as airlines reroute flights away from the conflict zone.
