Emcure expands Poviztra® use for MASH following CDSCO approval of GLP-1 agonist
Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd has announced that its co-marketed brand, Poviztra®, which contains innovator semaglutide (rDNA origin), will be available for the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults. This expansion follows the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization's (CDSCO) approval of Wegovy® for the indication, significantly addressing a critical unmet medical need in treating this progressive liver disease. The availability of Poviztra® now allows Emcure and its subsidiaries to offer the new indication, expanding access to innovator semaglutide for patients suffering from MASH. This condition, which is closely linked with obesity and type 2 diabetes, occurs when excess fat accumulation leads to chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and progressive liver damage.
The approval makes the molecule from Novo Nordisk the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist approved in India for the treatment of MASH. Poviztra® will be prescribed for adults presenting with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2-F3).
Clinical Significance
The approval is supported by results from the global Phase III ESSENCE trial, which demonstrated semaglutide's potential to improve outcomes in affected patients. The study showed resolution of steatohepatitis in 63% of participants and an improvement in liver fibrosis in 37% of patients.Satish Mehta, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited, commented on the development: "The approval for MASH marks an important milestone for patients living with a serious and often underdiagnosed liver disease. We are pleased to make this important new indication available through Poviztra®, further strengthening our commitment to bringing globally validated, innovative therapies to patients in India."
