Boeing Nears Historic Aircraft Deal With China Ahead of Trump’s Beijing Visit

Boeing Co. is approaching one of the largest aircraft sales in its history as negotiations advance with China for a massive order of narrowbody jets. The potential deal is expected to coincide with US President Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to Beijing, according to reports.

Proposed Order for 500 Boeing 737 Max Jets

The discussions center on a potential order for 500 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which could be formally announced during President Trump’s visit to China from March 31 to April 2. The trip would mark his first state visit to the country since 2017.

If finalized, the order would represent one of Boeing’s largest aircraft deals ever and a significant boost for the US aerospace manufacturer.

Separate Talks for Dreamliner and 777X Aircraft

In addition to the narrowbody jet order, Boeing and Chinese stakeholders are also negotiating a separate agreement involving around 100 widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X models.

However, sources indicated that the widebody aircraft agreement is not expected to be announced during the upcoming summit and may instead be revealed at a later stage.

Aircraft Orders Seen as Part of Broader Trade Engagement

The aircraft negotiations are expected to form part of broader trade discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Trump. The US administration has previously used major aircraft purchases from Boeing to reinforce economic agreements with international partners.

Following the Beijing summit, President Xi is expected to travel to Washington later in the year, which could further shape bilateral economic cooperation.

Stock Reaction and Market Impact

Investor sentiment reacted positively to the reports. Boeing shares rose by as much as 4%, becoming the top performer on the Dow Jones Industrial Average during trading on Friday.

As of 2:30 p.m. in New York, the stock remained the strongest performer among the 30 companies that make up the benchmark index.

Negotiations Continue Over Final Terms

Details of the potential announcement are still being negotiated. Reports suggest the US side is pushing for a firm aircraft commitment rather than a headline dollar figure tied to the deal.

Aviation Tensions Also Part of Discussions

The negotiations come amid broader aviation-related tensions between the two countries. One of the key issues involves US restrictions on the export of aircraft engines and other critical technologies needed for China’s domestically developed Comac C919 jetliner.

Requests for comment from China’s Ministry of Commerce, Boeing, and the White House were not immediately answered.
