Securing Frontier AI: India’s Strategic Talks with US and Tech Firms​

The Indian government is intensely engaged in high-level talks with the United States government and major technology corporations. The objective of these discussions is to gain critical access to advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. These frontier systems are crucial for significantly strengthening India's national cyber security capabilities, as confirmed by Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan on July 13.

Krishnan emphasized that access to AI systems capable of identifying sophisticated software vulnerabilities is identified as a "very high priority" for the government. This strategic push aims to elevate the nation's proactive digital defense posture.

Navigating Export Control Amidst Cyber Security Urgency​

While recognizing the immense importance of securing these advanced tools, Krishnan acknowledged that export control regulations remain a key consideration in the ongoing negotiations. The government is meticulously balancing the imperative for cutting-edge cyber defence against international technology transfer restrictions.

The talks are focused on ensuring that India can access and effectively utilize these advanced security paradigms without compromising national data integrity or adhering to restrictive global policies.

CERT-In Prepares Alternative Pathways Amid Waiting Game​

Until full access to these state-of-the-art frontier AI systems is secured, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has been actively evaluating alternative domestic and accessible AI models. These alternatives are being tested through controlled dry-run exercises.

These current backup models provide approximately 60-70 per cent of the capabilities offered by advanced security tools such as Anthropic's cyber security model, Mythos. This internal evaluation process is key to maintaining continuous preparedness in cyberspace.

Deployed Security Strategy: On-Premises Data Integrity Assured​

The overarching goal for these initiatives, as stated by Krishnan, is to comprehensively prepare India’s entire cyber defence ecosystem. A core focus is the pre-emptive identification of vulnerabilities before they can be successfully exploited by malicious actors.

A key element of the deployment strategy being examined by the government involves ensuring data sanctity and security. This includes carefully examining methods for deploying these sophisticated technologies while guaranteeing that sensitive workloads remain securely hosted on-premises within government infrastructure.
