Goyal Slams 'Baseless' Claims: India-US Trade Negotiations Surge Ahead of Final Framework Deal

Piyush Goyal, Commerce Minister, strongly refuted a recent Reuters report that suggested India had rejected an immediate trade agreement with the United States and was intentionally delaying negotiations for better terms. The minister dismissed the allegations as "completely false, baseless and misleading," reiterating both nations' commitment to a mutually beneficial commercial partnership.

Piyush Goyal Rejects 'Hold Out' Narrative on US Trade Deal

Responding directly to the reports detailing stalled talks, Mr. Goyal clarified that relations between India and the US remain highly constructive. He mentioned having "fantastic meetings" with USTR Jamieson Greer during his visit to Delhi in June.

Goyal confirmed that both sides reaffirmed their commitment towards an agreement that must be commercially meaningful and balanced. This deal is intended to deliver tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers across both countries. The Minister asserted that negotiation teams are fully engaged toward achieving this shared objective.

Commerce Secretary Details Progress and Importance of Comparative Advantage

Adding support to the minister's assertion, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal provided an update on the ongoing trade negotiations in New Delhi. Mr. Agrawal confirmed that the proposed India-US trade agreement is progressing well and remains firmly on track.

He stated that the framework deal is ready, emphasizing that it will be signed when the time is appropriate. However, Agrawal cautioned that signing must ultimately be guided by comparative advantage versus other competing countries. He noted that specific preferences are currently being structured to meet this criterion.

Secretary Agrawal also highlighted positive developments in bilateral trade outside the main agreement. He mentioned India's increasing energy imports from the US, which is contributing significantly toward diversifying the nation’s energy sources.

The Commerce Secretary concluded by emphasizing the strong engagement between both nations. He stated that there are "no negativity, difference between India and US," confirming that both sides fully understand each other's expectations within the framework deal.
