Crude Oil Surge Amid West Asia Tensions as Market Focus Shifts to Q1 Earnings and Rupee Pressure

The Indian equities market closed higher with a robust rally, although the upside was partially capped by escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Despite global volatility, investors displayed growing confidence in a healthy earnings season ahead, leading the focus decisively away from mid and smallcaps toward large-cap corporate fundamentals. The Nifty 50 soared by 0.53 percent to 24,334, while the BSE Sensex jumped 0.75 percent to 78,151.

Market Performance and Near-Term Outlook

The previous week saw an encouraging trend, buoyed by positive Q1FY27 business updates across key sectors. However, the market remains consolidated with a clear positive bias, though volatility is expected to persist. Experts note that renewed tensions in West Asia continue to impact oil prices and exert pressure on the Indian rupee.

Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal Financial Services stated that Indian equities are likely to witness a gradual uptrend next week, driven by the strong Q1FY27 earnings season so far. For global investors, Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments suggested closely monitoring Japan’s inflation data for cues regarding future interest rate directions. He also noted that corrections in select Asian markets could improve India's relative attractiveness within emerging markets.

West Asia Tensions and Global Oil Price Spike

Geopolitical tensions remain a primary driver, with escalating conflict in West Asia serving as the catalyst for oil prices. Brent crude futures posted their largest weekly gains since April, rising 15.91 percent to $88.10 a barrel after a gap-up opening. This follows a nearly 6 percent rally witnessed in the preceding week.

The volatility is fueled by Iran formally suspending its MOU commitments and describing the conflict as an "existential war." Washington has warned that direct targeting of Iranian power infrastructure may occur without diplomatic success. Furthermore, Tehran instructed Yemen's Houthi movement to be ready to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait should US strikes continue on Iranian military assets.

An important development noted by CNBC is that Iran and Syria have agreed to rebuild an oil pipeline as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. Kaynat Chainwala of Kotak Securities emphasized that "Any diplomatic signal from Washington or Tehran will move markets far more than any data point," maintaining the upside bias due to the dual chokepoint risk.

Indian Rupee and Currency Dynamics

The domestic currency faced headwinds, as the rupee depreciated further to close at 96.27 against the US dollar, marking the lowest ever closing level for the week. This 0.94 percent weakening has continued for the third consecutive week, weighted by elevated crude oil prices and cautious foreign fund flows.

Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities advised that market participants will closely monitor global developments, crude oil movements, and FII activity for any directional move. Technically, he projects the rupee to trade within the 96.00–96.55 range, though the overall trend is expected to favor weakness. Separately, the US dollar index fell 0.21 percent during the week to 100.754.

Corporate Earnings and Economic Indicators

The market narrative next week will be heavily shaped by corporate performance. More than 250 companies are scheduled to release their June quarter earnings scorecard. Key names carrying nearly 14 percent weightage in the Nifty 50 include Infosys, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Auto, and Cipla. Non-Nifty entities such as IndusInd Bank, TVS Motor Company, and Adani Green Energy are also expected to report results.

Globally, investors will focus on flash PMI readings from Europe and Japan, alongside the European Central Bank's interest rate decision, which economists most expect to keep rates unchanged in their July 23 policy meeting. Domestically, the flash PMI data for July (releasing July 24) will offer a timely assessment of business confidence.

Foreign Institutional Investment Trends

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) saw inconsistent flows last week. FIIs were net sellers of over Rs 9,110 crore in the cash segment, contrasting sharply with the previous week's net buying of more than Rs 4,600 crore. For the current month, however, they have sold shares worth more than Rs 4,500 crore.

In contrast, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) maintained strong purchasing momentum, adding Rs 9,800 crore to their net buying for the week, bringing their cumulative monthly purchase total to Rs 21,074 crore.

Technical Analysis and Future Roadmaps

Technically, the Nifty 50 rebounded with a bullish candlestick formation and successfully maintained positions above its short-term and long-term moving averages. However, critical resistance remains at the 50-week EMA (24,380) and last week's high (24,530).

Support is located in the 24,000–23,950 zone; a breach below this level could see the focus shift to the 23,800 mark. Momentum indicators remain supportive on a weekly basis: the RSI was at 51.55, and the MACD remained above its signal line. The India VIX, or fear gauge, rose by 7.33 percent to 13.15 but is still trading below all key moving averages.

Primary Market Listings and Key Corporate Actions

The primary market pipeline looks robust with seven new IPOs scheduled for the coming week. On the mainboard, Cube Highways Trust InvIT will launch its Rs 5,000-crore public issue on July 22. SME listings include Gulf Lloyds India on July 20. Additionally, five companies are set to list next week, including SBI Funds Management and Alpine Texworld on July 21.

Key corporate actions include the listing of Caliber Mining & Logistics on July 24. Throughout the coming period, market participants must also monitor key financial releases such as bank loan and deposit growth for the fortnight ended July 10 and infrastructure output data for June.
