Crude Oil Poised for Massive Weekly Surge Amid Geopolitical Crisis; Gold Falls as Dollar Strengthens

Global Energy Prices Rally on Supply Concerns

Commodity markets demonstrated significant volatility on July 24. Geopolitical instability has bolstered crude oil, setting the commodity sector up for expected weekly gains. Meanwhile, precious metals faced headwinds amid strengthening U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields.

Oil prices were particularly boosted by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea involving Houthi attacks targeting oil tankers. This heightened uncertainty created concerns regarding potential supply disruptions globally. Furthermore, Kazakhstan temporarily reduced its production following the shutdown of a main export route.

Brent crude traded slightly down 0.72% to $99.97 a barrel in early trading. WTI crude followed closely, falling 0.76% to $91.49 a barrel. Despite the initial dips, both benchmarks remain firmly on track for substantial weekly gains of 13.5% and 10.9%, respectively.

Gold and Precious Metals Face Downtrend as Dollar Strengthens

Gold extended its recent decline despite surging energy prices. This trend is linked to expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve may maintain a tighter monetary policy stance for an extended period of time.

The U.S. dollar gained strength, coinciding with rising Treasury yields. The dollar also hovered near a 40-year high against the Japanese yen. This strengthening was supported by higher oil prices and resurfacing global trade tensions.

Silver remained relatively stable at $57.62 an ounce after having dropped 3.6% in the previous session. Platinum and palladium both edged lower in trading.

Context of Crude Oil Movements

In a prior trading session, Brent saw a powerful surge, rising 7%. This allowed it to settle above the $100-a-barrel mark for the first time since May.

The market remains highly sensitive to supply side constraints and geopolitical developments across critical shipping lanes. The current instability is directly contributing to the bullish outlook for energy commodities.
