CPI Inflation Surges in July 2026: Gold and Jewellery Prices Drive Up National Rates Amid Stabilized Food Sector

The Central Statistics releases on August 12, 2026, reveal that the all-India Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw a rise for the month of July. The provisional combined CPI inflation rate stood at 4.45%. This marks a slight acceleration from the 4.38% recorded in June 2026.

National Inflation Rises to 4.45% as Food Prices Hold Steady

The overall national consumer price level is captured by the Combined Index, which stands at 107.94 (Base 2024=100). This figure indicates a 4.45% year-on-year inflation rate when compared to July 2025. Rural and urban consumers experienced rates of 4.84% and 3.96%, respectively.

The Food Inflation, tracked by the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), registered a provisional rate of 5.52%. This indicates continued price pressure in the food basket compared to rural and urban trends for the month.

Housing and Services Sector Report Low Inflations

In contrast to the rising CPI, housing inflation remains relatively contained. The year-on-year housing inflation rate for July 2026 is provisional at 2.22%. This metric shows a slight divergence from the June data, with rural and urban housing inflation standing at 2.80% and 2.01%, respectively.

A deeper look into the goods basket reveals significant price movements across various sectors. Items like Potato and Motor car and jeep recorded low inflation rates of -16.56% and -6.72%, respectively, indicating market stabilization in these categories.

Jewellery and Ginger Lead High-Inflation Goods Basket

While some key commodities have stabilized, luxury items and certain perishables significantly drove up the overall cost basket. Silver Jewellery recorded a high inflation rate of 109.84% as of July 2026, driven by strong market demand for precious metals.

Similarly, Ginger registered an alarmingly high inflation rate of 83.62%. Other items witnessing substantial inflation include Gold/Diamond/Platinum Jewellery at 32.98% and Onion at 22.54%, signaling persistent upward pressure on specific commodities.

State-Level Inflation Shows Significant Variation

The CPI data reveals notable geographical variations in cost of living across India. Several states reported high rates, highlighting regional economic disparities. Karnataka recorded a combined inflation rate of 4.89%.

Other regions also showed marked trends. Kerala registered a combined inflation rate of 4.01%, while Telangana faced the highest reported growth at 6.32%. These differences underscore the diverse inflationary pressures experienced by consumers across various states.
