
Coal India Logs Over 8% Growth in Production, Supplies Surge 18.38% in July FY'27
Coal India Limited (CIL) reported a robust operational performance in July of the financial year 2026 to 2027. The company registered an 8.44% growth in coal production, reaching 50.36 million tonnes (MT), and saw a significant rise of 18.38% in coal supplies, which totaled 64.19 MT for the month.The coal supply achieved in July FY'27 marked a record high for the month, surpassing the previous highest July supply of 60.5 MT recorded during FY 24-25. This performance follows another record performance in June FY'27, when CIL supplied 65.95 MT, which was the highest monthly supply ever achieved for that month.
Cumulative Performance and Operational Efficiency
In terms of cumulative performance during the first four months of FY'27 (April through July), CIL maintained strong momentum. The company registered a 6.9% rise in coal supplies, reaching 262.04 MT. This volume represents the highest ever recorded for this corresponding period, compared to the previous record of 259.4 MT set during April-July FY 24-25.The sustained operational momentum is complemented by a significant improvement in overburden (OB) removal, a critical activity for ensuring uninterrupted coal extraction. In July FY'27, OB removal increased by 21.11% to 120.35 million cubic meters (MCuM), up from 99.36 MCuM recorded in July FY'26. Cumulatively, the overburden removal across April-July FY'27 stood at 625.02 MCuM, showing a growth of 2.85% over the previous fiscal year's period.
Sectoral Supply Growth Highlights
CIL witnessed strong growth in coal supplies to both major consumer segments—the power sector and the non-regulated industry.In July FY'27, supplies directed to the power sector grew by 18%, increasing to 49.77 MT from 42.35 MT in the corresponding month of the previous year. Simultaneously, supplies to the non-regulated sector also saw healthy growth, rising 21% to 14.42 MT from 11.89 MT during the same period.
The company noted that these results were achieved despite challenges posed by rainfall, attributing its success to a demand-responsive inventory optimization strategy, which allowed CIL to maintain a comfortable balance between production and supplies.
