ALPA India Demands Immediate Flight Suspension Over High-Risk Gulf Routes​

The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has strongly urged the government to immediately suspend all flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other high-risk destinations in the Gulf region. This demand follows concerns regarding the rapidly deteriorating security situation stemming from the West Asia conflict.

In a formal letter dated July 20, ALPA India addressed Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) chief Vir Vikram Yadav. The association warned that recent reports indicate explicit threats directed at Dubai and Abu Dhabi, significantly heightening operational risks for civil aviation personnel.

ALPA India emphasized that civil aircraft operating into or over conflict-affected regions are vulnerable to multiple dangers. These risks include direct military activity, misidentification incidents, missile engagements, electronic warfare, GPS interference, and swiftly changing airspace restrictions.

The association warned that any mistake in such an unstable environment could lead to a catastrophic event. Therefore, ALPA India requested the civil aviation ministry and DGCA to suspend operations by Indian carriers destined for these affected Gulf destinations. The request demands an immediate threat assessment from national security agencies, intelligence authorities, and aviation experts.

Heightened Security Concerns Following Regional Escalation​

The pilots' body issued its caution amidst increased hostilities in West Asia. This escalation follows the renewal of tensions between the US and Iran eight days ago, during which both civil and military targets were reportedly hit by both sides. This event has intensified fears regarding a potential full-scale war resurgence in the region.

Uncertainty across West Asia, a crucial global transit hub, has repeatedly disrupted international aviation over recent months. The disruption follows earlier strikes conducted by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28. Airlines globally have been compelled to reroute flights, avoid conflict-affected airspace, and consequently absorb higher operational costs.

Several aviation regulators across Europe and North America have periodically issued advisories advising airlines to exercise caution when operating through these volatile conflict zones.

Impact on Indian Carriers and Strategic Importance of the Gulf Market​

The Gulf region holds significant strategic importance for Indian carriers. Major airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet operate dozens of daily services connecting major Indian cities to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other GCC capitals.

Currently, traffic between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) constitutes 50 percent of international passenger traffic flying into or out of India. Moreover, the GCC region functions as a vital transit hub for passengers traveling towards Europe, North America, and Africa.

ALPA India stated that this is not their initial expression of concern regarding operations in conflict-prone areas. The current representation is a follow up to an earlier submission to DGCA back in March, urging the regulator to adopt a precautionary stance given the evolving military situation.

Safety Paramount: Preventive Action Demanded by ALPA India​

Signed by ALPA India president and IFALPA director Capt Sam Thomas, the letter stresses that passenger safety and crew security must remain the overriding priority above all else. The association argues that preventative regulatory action is significantly better than attempting to respond after an avoidable tragedy occurs.

Despite these warnings, some carriers have made plans for resumption of services. For instance, Air India and Air India Express signaled full restoration of their regular Middle East network for the upcoming schedule by mid-July, with normal flight inventories being placed back on sale. Air India Express recently launched a new Navi Mumbai to Abu Dhabi route in the region.
