Cipla Stock Surges on Q1 Profit Leap; Motilal Oswal Cautions, Citing Domestic Strength and Future Hurdles

Cipla shares witnessed a solid rally in the morning trade after the drugmaker announced its quarterly results for the June quarter. The stock traded at Rs 1,428.50, gaining Rs 35.50 or 2.55% as the company reported an operational performance that was largely in line with expectations.

The strong response followed the release of consolidated net profit of Rs 789 crore for the quarter ended June 30. This figure marks a sequential improvement of 42% from the March quarter's Rs 555 crore, although it is down 39% compared to the previous year's results of Rs 1,298 crore.

Cipla Q1 Earnings Highlights and Financial Metrics

Revenue from operations for the company stood at Rs 7,119 crore, showing a growth of 9% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and 2% year-on-year (YoY). EBITDA reached Rs 1,192 crore. This represented a 25% sequential jump but was down 34% compared to the same period last year.

The company managed to improve its EBITDA margin to 16.74% from 14.6% in the previous quarter. However, this margin still fell short of the 25.56% achieved a year earlier. Despite these declines, Cipla concluded the quarter with a net cash position valued at Rs 9,494 crore.

Motilal Oswal's Assessment and Target Price

Motilal Oswal Financial Services maintained its "Neutral" rating on the stock, setting a target price of Rs 1,420. The brokerage highlighted that Cipla delivered a "largely in-line operational performance" in Q1FY27. They specifically noted that earnings were better than expected due to higher other income for the quarter.

The firm's view was underpinned by positive growth trends in India. Motilal Oswal pointed out that the "India segment's YoY growth has been on an uptrend for the fourth consecutive quarter." This domestic strength is attributed to increasing demand for chronic therapies, improved growth in acute therapies, and strong execution across trade generics and consumer health.

Outlook: Domestic Momentum Versus Global Challenges

While the Indian segment continues its upward trajectory, Motilal Oswal observed subdued sales run rates in the North America (NA) market segment. This stagnation is linked to a gradual off-take of new launches and remediation measures for Lanreotide alongside the gestation period for potential future introductions.

Looking forward, the brokerage has adjusted its FY27 and FY28 earnings estimates upwards by 4% and 2%, respectively. These increases are driven by sustained domestic growth and positive momentum in the South Africa prescription business. Nevertheless, Motilal Oswal cautioned that their estimates project FY27 to be a second consecutive year of earnings decline.

Future Growth Drivers and Management Confidence

Motilal Oswal believes that potential product launches planned for the second half of FY27 are expected to drive a growth revival in FY28. The brokerage added that while current valuation factors into an FY28 earnings turnaround, they maintained their "Neutral" stance pending greater clarity.

Management remains confident in its guidance, retaining the FY27 EBITDA margin target range at 18.5-20%. Furthermore, the company anticipates achieving a $1 billion annualized FY27 exit run rate in US sales. This goal is supported by anticipated launches such as g-Advair and potential peptide introductions, alongside the scale-up of g-Ventolin.
