CAMS and IIT Madras Expand FinTech Innovation Lab to Focus on AI, Blockchain, and Startup Ecosystem

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Computer Age Management Services Limited (CAMS) have significantly expanded their collaboration through the CAMS IIT Madras FinTech Innovation Lab (CIFIL). This renewed partnership is designed to accelerate innovation in financial technologies by strengthening industry-academia engagement across the rapidly evolving digital finance ecosystem.

The initiatives are driven through CIFIL, which was initially established in 2022 as part of a CSR effort between the two organizations. It leverages CAMS' extensive expertise in financial services and technology with IIT Madras' academic and research capabilities to promote innovation within the BFSI sector. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) detailing these upcoming initiatives was signed on August 12, 2026, at the IIT Madras campus.

Driving Next-Generation FinTech

In its next phase, CIFIL is focusing its efforts across a broad spectrum of emerging financial technologies. These areas include AI in financial services, digital payments, blockchain and tokenisation, cybersecurity, WealthTech, InsurTech, Regulatory Technology, digital lending, data analytics, and financial inclusion.

The Lab aims to expand its research portfolio by developing intellectual property, facilitating technology transfer, and creating opportunities for the commercialization of research-led solutions.

Anuj Kumar, Managing Director at CAMS, stated that CIFIL was established to create an intersection between industry experience and academic exploration. He added that as they renew their partnership with IIT Madras, they aim to foster an environment where bold ideas can be explored, challenged, and shaped into long-term value for the financial services ecosystem.

Opportunities for Students and Entrepreneurs

The collaboration provides structured opportunities for students and early-stage ventures. These initiatives include internships, hackathons, expert interactions, research projects, and startup mentoring, ensuring practical exposure to financial technology challenges while strengthening students' entrepreneurial capabilities.

Prof V Kamakoti, Director at IIT Madras, emphasized that the CAMS FinTech Innovation Lab is a key step toward IIT Madras’ commitment to driving innovation. He stated that by combining IIT Madras’ research excellence with CAMS’ deep industry expertise, the partnership has the potential to accelerate growth and build cutting edge fintech solutions for Bharat's financial ecosystem.

A core focus of CIFIL will be strengthening support for fintech startups and entrepreneurs. The Lab offers these ventures access to technical and faculty expertise, industry networks, validation support, research collaborations, and innovation challenges, aiming to connect promising startups with real-world industry opportunities.

Prof M. Thenmozhi, Head of the CAMS IITM FinTech Innovation Lab at IIT Madras, stated that their vision for CIFIL is to become a global center for FinTech innovation, co-creating solutions that address unsolved problems in the Banking, Financial markets and Financial services sector.

Talent Development and Industry Collaboration

CIFIL is also expanding its focus on talent development through professional education programs. These include a Professional Certificate Programme in FinTech and a Certificate Programme in Personal Financial Planning, designed for students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and working professionals. Participants who complete the relevant program and meet academic requirements will receive a Professional Certificate from CODE, IIT Madras, through CIFIL.

For industry partners, CIFIL serves as a platform to collaborate directly with IIT Madras faculty and researchers on business and technology challenges. Partners can evaluate emerging technologies, develop proofs-of-concept, conduct applied research, and facilitate interaction between regulators, academia, startups, and the broader financial ecosystem.

Since its establishment, CIFIL has supported multiple fintech research projects, mentored startups through incubation and pre-incubation, conducted national hackathons, and developed executive education programs across digital payments, AI, blockchain, cybersecurity, and wealth management.
