C-DAC and GSI Partner to Forge Next-Gen Geoscience for Mineral Security and Disaster Resilience​

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have formalized a strategic collaboration with the signing of an Umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership is designed to profoundly strengthen geoscience, mineral exploration, and disaster management capabilities by leveraging advanced next-generation technologies.

The MoU was signed in New Delhi, bringing together C-DAC's computational power with GSI’s profound geological expertise. The collaboration aims to address complex sub-surface exploration challenges through the integrated application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC).

Leveraging HPC and AI for Deep Earth Science​

The partnership envisions a revolutionary approach to geophysical data handling. It focuses on utilizing advanced digital technologies, including HPC, to process massive geophysical datasets effectively. This capability will enable high-resolution 3D subsurface mapping crucial for modern exploration efforts.

Furthermore, the collaboration plans to accelerate scientific progress by processing decades of unstructured geological records. These vast archives will be processed and integrated into a domain Large Language Model (LLM), offering unprecedented insight into Earth’s structure.

Enhancing Disaster Mitigation through Advanced Monitoring​

Beyond resource discovery, the MoU significantly bolsters disaster mitigation protocols across India. The partnership will utilize Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology for intensive slope-scale landslide monitoring. This work is integral to building robust early warning systems nationwide.

The joint efforts will also include focused studies on Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF). By combining advanced computing with geological knowledge, the collaboration aims to create proactive defenses against these growing natural hazards.

Strategic Impact on Economic Security and Self-Reliance​

A primary goal of this alliance is to accelerate the discovery of critical minerals and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The successful pursuit of these objectives will directly contribute to strengthening India’s economic security and supply chain resilience.
