BHEL, Coal India Commit Rs 25,000 Crore to Odisha Project: Gasification Set to Transform Coal Sector
Bhatia Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Coal India Limited (CIL) have jointly committed a massive investment of ₹25,000 crore towards a coal gasification project in Odisha. This significant initiative marks a major strategic shift from conventional power generation, aiming to unlock new industrial opportunities using the state's vast coal reserves. The announcement was made by Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy during an event held in Jharsuguda, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. The project is designed not only to diversify how coal is used but also to bolster downstream industrial activity within Odisha.
Strategic Importance of Coal Gasification
Coal gasification is the process of converting coal into synthesis gas (syngas). This syngas, in turn, can be utilized to produce a range of valuable products including chemicals, synthetic fuels, and fertilisers. The technology represents a method to dramatically enhance the economic value of India's abundant coal reserves.Minister Reddy emphasized that this initiative will significantly contribute to fertiliser production within the state. Beyond industrial diversification, the project is set to generate considerable employment opportunities for local residents in Odisha.
Diversifying Coal Utilisation and Reducing Import Dependence
The Minister highlighted that the Central Government has a broader push toward promoting coal gasification across various sectors. This move is part of a strategic effort to diversify coal utilisation nationwide. By moving beyond its traditional role in power generation, coal can be directed towards critical industrial inputs. To encourage this transition, the Central Government is providing an additional ₹46,000 crore specifically for coal gasification projects. This support underscores the government's commitment to promoting cleaner and more efficient use of domestic coal resources.
Boosting Odisha's Industrial Landscape
The investment by BHEL and CIL is expected to strengthen industrial growth in Odisha. By facilitating new avenues such as fertiliser production, the project aims to create a robust economic benefit for the region. This effort aligns with national goals aimed at reducing reliance on imported feedstock for key industrial sectors like fertilisers and chemicals.Disclaimer: Due care and diligence have been taken in compiling and presenting news and market-related content.
