Bharat Gears Ltd Chairman Files Appeal Regarding Passport Revocation, Assures Board of Continued Responsibilities

Bharat Gears Ltd (BGL) has provided an update regarding the citizenship status of its Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Surinder Paul Kanwar. The company confirmed that Mr. Kanwar has filed an appeal concerning the revocation of his passport.

Previously, the Board of Directors held a meeting on January 23, 2026, after considering a legal opinion. The board concluded that the determination of the citizenship status of Mr. Surinder Paul Kanwar vests exclusively with the Central Government. Consequently, the company determined that until a direction or order is issued by the Central Government, his citizenship status remains unchanged, and he continues to discharge his responsibilities as Chairman and Managing Director.

In a recent communication, Mr. Kanwar informed the Board that he received a communication from the Regional Passport Office regarding the revocation of his passport, which includes a right of appeal to the Central Passport Office. Acting on legal advice, he filed an appeal on April 15, 2026, before the competent authority at the Central Passport Office. This appeal seeks two main objectives: a stay of the revocation during the pendency of the appeal and the quashing of the revocation order.

Mr. Kanwar clarified that since he concludes the Central Passport Office is the authority empowered to adjudicate the matter, he promptly informed the Board upon filing the appeal.

He reiterated that the determination of his citizenship status lies exclusively with the Central Government (Ministry of Home Affairs). On separate occasions, Mr. Kanwar wrote to the Secretaries of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs via a letter dated March 30, 2026, dispatched by Speed Post on April 04, 2026, seeking clarification on his citizenship status, and is currently awaiting a response.

The company has received repeated assurances from Mr. Kanwar that he remains fully mindful of his fiduciary duties. He stated that he will continue to keep the Board promptly informed of any material developments and advised that statutory authorities be informed in a fair and transparent manner. Bharat Gears Ltd also affirmed that it will keep stakeholders informed of any material developments in this matter as necessary.
