BCCL Hands Over Dugdha Coal Washery to JSW Steel Limited in Landmark Sector Monetization Move

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, completed a significant milestone on June 17, 2026, by formally handing over the Dugdha Coal Washery to JSW Steel Limited. The transition marks a historical initiative towards monetizing assets within the Indian coal sector.

The dugdha coal washery, which possesses a processing capacity of 2.0 million tons per annum (MTPA), was officially transferred during an event held at the Coal Bhavan headquarters in the presence of CMD BCCL, Mr. Manoj Kumar Atwal, General Managers, and representatives from JSW Steel and JSNL.

This asset monetization, conducted in line with directives from the Ministry of Coal, is noted as India's first such coal washery monetization effort. The project involves private sector participation and represents a crucial step toward modernizing coal assets, increasing operational efficiency, and ensuring the optimum utilization of resources within the industry.

The collaboration between BCCL and JSW Steel is expected to significantly enhance coal beneficiation capability. It will lead to better use of domestic coal and increase the availability of high-quality washed coal (washed coal coal). Furthermore, the initiative strongly supports the goals of 'Mission Coal' by reducing dependence on imported coal and conserving foreign exchange reserves.

The partnership offers multiple benefits across industrial growth. These include improving the coal supply chain, promoting sustainable and modern coal processing, creating new employment opportunities, and contributing to industrial development in Jharkhand and surrounding regions. This venture is set to play a vital role in realizing a self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) and building a strong domestic coal sector.
