The government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are catalyzing a massive push in India's advanced manufacturing base. This sentiment was highlighted by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, who provided details on the implementation status of both the PLI-Auto scheme and the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage during a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

State of PLI-Auto Scheme Implementation​

The PLI for Automobile and Auto Component Industry (PLI-Auto), introduced with a budgetary outlay of ₹25,938 crore on September 23, 2021, continues to drive significant industrial growth. As of March 31, 2026, the scheme has attracted substantial investment commitments across the country.

The cumulative data indicates that investments stand at ₹44,326 crore under PLI-Auto. This robust commitment has generated employment for 67,820 individuals nationwide. Furthermore, incentives amounting to ₹2,386.36 crore have been disbursed to beneficiaries so far.

Key State Contributions to Automobile Manufacturing​

The pan-India nature of the PLI-Auto scheme allows applicants to set up units across various states. As of March 31, 2026, a total of 225 manufacturing units have been established under this initiative. Maharashtra leads in industrial concentration, reporting 66 such units.

Tamil Nadu also stands out as a major hub, hosting 38 dedicated PLI-Auto manufacturing units. Other states making significant contributions include Haryana with 35 units and Uttar Pradesh with 13 units. Gujarat recorded 10 units while Uttarakhand registered 9 units under the scheme. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Telangana account for the remaining established units.

National Momentum in Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage​

The PLI incentive program dedicated to the "National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage," approved in May 2021 with an outlay of ₹18,100 Crore for a 50 GWh capacity, is rapidly scaling up storage capabilities. This focused initiative has seen encouraging market traction despite zero firms having claimed incentives thus far.

To date, the ACC scheme has attracted a collective investment of ₹5,180 crore from beneficiary firms. The program has also contributed to the employment of 1,277 individuals as of May 31, 2026. This focus is bolstering India's ambition in energy storage technology.

Strategic Growth in Battery Project Capacity​

A total of 40 GWh capacity has been awarded across various companies under the ACC project segment. These projects are concentrated across three key states: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Ola Cell Technologies Pvt. Ltd., located in Tamil Nadu, was awarded a capacity of 20 GWh.

Other significant awards include Reliance New Energy Battery Storage Ltd.'s allocation of 5 GWh in Gujarat and another 10 GWh for Reliance New Energy Battery Ltd. also in Gujarat. ACC Energy Storage Pvt. Ltd. has secured 5 GWh in Karnataka, contributing to the accelerated growth of advanced battery storage solutions in India.
