
Aurobindo Pharma Signs Non-Exclusive Voluntary License Agreement with MSD for Generic Alimatravir
Aurobindo Pharma Limited has entered into a non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreement with Merck & Co., Inc. (MSD), which is among a select group of global generic manufacturers. This royalty-free collaboration is set to enable the supply of generic alimatravir to 129 Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).The agreement focuses on providing access to the medication in LMICs, which are responsible for the majority of new HIV diagnoses globally.
Executing such agreements before the completion of Phase 3 trial enrollment is noted as a first within HIV prevention efforts. This move is intended to facilitate the necessary scale-up required for Aurobindo Pharma to manufacture and supply generic alimatravir, ensuring it meets internationally recognized standards following regulatory approvals.
Umesh K, Associate President and Head -Global Access & Licensing at Aurobindo Pharma, stated that expanding access to high quality affordable medicines remains central to the company’s purpose. He added that the collaboration with MSD reflects a commitment to partnering with innovators to accelerate equitable access to potential new therapies.
"Through this voluntary licensing agreement, we look forward to making alimatravir available across eligible low and middle income countries, subject to successful development and regulatory approvals, helping strengthen global efforts towards HIV prevention," K said.
Gregg Szabo, senior vice president of Global HIV Marketing at MSD, expressed pleasure in collaborating with Aurobindo Pharma and other manufacturers involved in these voluntary licensing agreements. He noted that the aim is to manufacture generic alimatravir in 129 LMICs if approved by regulatory bodies.
"We hope this early action will help stakeholders across the HIV response begin planning for the scale-up needed to reach people who could benefit from HIV prevention, following the necessary regulatory approvals," Szabo stated.
