Andhra Pradesh Pollution Board Issues Stop Production Order for ONGC's Mori Field Well

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has been subject to a directive from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) regarding operations at the Mori Field. The order, received on 24.04.2026, mandated a halt to all further activities at the Mori #05 Well, citing environmental violations related to a previous incident.

The APPCB issued the 'Stop Production Order' to the Mori #05 Well in the Mori Field, directing the company to immediately cease all operations. The order stems from an incident that occurred on 05.01.2026, when a well blowout, followed by a fire, took place at the site.

Operational Background and Impact

The Mori field, containing the well 'Mori#5', was previously handed over to the Production enhancement contract (PEC) Operator, M/s Deep Exploration services private limited (M/s DESPL), in 2025.

Historically, the Mori#5 well was drilled in March 1994 and was in production from January 1995 to April 2009. Since April 2009, there has been no production from the well. The uncontrolled blowout event occurred on 05.01.2026 during a workover job planned by M/s DESPL. The blowout was successfully capped on 10.01.2026 by the ONGC Crisis Management Team, and the well has remained closed since.

Regarding the impact, ONGC stated that considering the size and scale of its overall operations, the effect of the order is not considered significant. The company intends to review the mandate in detail and respond accordingly.
