Context of Cancer Screening in India
Cancer accounts for nearly nine per cent of total deaths related to non-communicable diseases in India. In 2022, there were over 1.41 million individuals diagnosed with cancer, leading to over 900,000 fatalities. Breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer related mortality among women, while oral cancer is the top cancer among men.
However, screening rates remain low across India, exhibiting wide disparity among states. The following table summarizes regional differences in reported cancer screening coverage:
| Region | Screening Coverage Status |
|---|---|
| Southern and Western Regions | Report highest cancer screening coverage |
| Northern, Central, and Northeastern Regions | Lag behind in cancer screening coverage |
The FDA Breakthrough Device designation references eight cancer types—bladder, colorectal, oesophageal, gastric, liver, lung, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer—in individuals aged 45 or older who are at typical average risk for cancer as defined by the agency.
