Zappfresh and Local Farmers Partner for Development of 300-Tonne Freshwater Fish Farming in Assam
New Delhi: DSM Fresh Foods Limited, operating as Zappfresh, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gohpur Fish Farmer Producer Company Limited. The partnership is focused on establishing the Assam Aqua Project, an integrated freshwater fish farming initiative designed to strengthen backward integration and build a structured sourcing ecosystem for the company's seafood business in Gohpur, Biswanath District, Assam. The project involves approximately 100 acres of land and targets an annual production capacity of around 300 tonnes of freshwater fish. The operations will employ organized and scientific aquaculture practices, focusing on crucial elements such as fish seed sourcing, feed management, water quality monitoring, and harvest planning. Beyond farming, the project plans to establish essential post-harvest infrastructure, including processing facilities, cold chain logistics, and distribution systems to ensure efficient farm-to-market movement of the fish.
Gohpur Fish Farmer Producer Company Limited, an organized body representing local farmers in the region and chaired by Anup Sarmah, will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end ground operations of the project. This collaboration ensures that the initiative remains closely tied to the needs and knowledge of the local farming community.
The Assam Aqua Project is also structured to deliver significant socioeconomic benefits to the surrounding area. It is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth in Biswanath District across farming, processing, and logistics functions. Furthermore, the project design includes the participation of women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in associated activities.
Deepanshu Manchanda, Managing Director of Zappfresh, highlighted the strategic importance of the venture, stating that strengthening sourcing capabilities and building long-term supply ecosystems remain a primary focus for the company. He noted that Assam is one of India's most significant freshwater fishery markets and believes this partnership provides the ideal foundation to build a sustainable aquaculture value chain.
Manchanda further added that the project aims to improve income levels among fish farmers in the area, contributing toward reducing the state's fish supply gap. As part of its broader sourcing strategy, Zappfresh continues to pursue collaborations designed to create an organized and efficient supply chain across key food categories.
