WABAG Secures 'Large' International Order for Expansion of Donauinsel Water Works in Vienna
VA Tech Wabag Limited has been awarded a significant 'Large' order by the City of Vienna, Municipal Department MA 31 - Wiener Wasser, for the expansion of the Donauinsel Water Works in Vienna, Austria. This contract strengthens WABAG's role as a provider of integrated water technology solutions for complex public infrastructure. The project involves delivering the complete technology package for the new water works. The scope includes process engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation and control systems, and building services. The facility will incorporate a modern multi-barrier treatment process designed to ensure robust drinking water supply. This advanced process encompasses oxidation, ozonation, advanced oxidation, filtration, activated carbon filtration, and UV disinfection.
The new Donauinsel Water Works project is vital to the City of Vienna's 'Wiener Wasser 2050' strategy. With a design capacity reaching up to 1,000 litres per second (equivalent to approximately 86 MLD), the expansion will greatly contribute to securing Vienna's long-term drinking water supply. By treating groundwater from protected well fields and feeding high-quality water into the city’s network, the project adds a controllable groundwater-based pillar alongside the existing alpine spring water supply, supporting the growing population and addressing climate change challenges.
The contract is categorized as an International Project and is classified as a 'Large' order, corresponding to a value range of USD 30 to 75 million in international terms. The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2030, followed by acceptance milestones.
Mahmut Gedek, CEO - Europe Cluster, commented on the achievement, stating, "We are pleased to have secured this important project in Austria. The expansion of the Donauinsel Water Works is a landmark project for Vienna's long-term drinking water supply and a strong validation of WABAG's technological expertise.
