US Announces 125.87% Countervailing Duty on Indian Solar Products
The United States has announced preliminary countervailing duties of 125.87 percent on imports of certain Indian solar products, alleging that the products are unfairly subsidized by New Delhi.According to an official US order, on February 24, 2026, the US Department of Commerce issued its preliminary affirmative determinations in the countervailing duty investigations concerning crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, whether or not assembled into modules, from India, Indonesia, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
The action specifically covers crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, a critical component in solar modules.
Separate From 10% Global Tariff
The 125.87 percent duty is separate from the 10 percent tariffs announced by the Trump administration on all countries from February 24.This means the countervailing duty forms part of a targeted trade action linked specifically to solar imports.
Indian Solar Exports to US Surge
The move comes at a time when Indian solar exports to the United States have risen sharply. According to the US order, imports of solar products from India increased to USD 792.6 million in 2024 from USD 83.86 million in 2022.The steep preliminary duty has weighed heavily on investor sentiment, leading to a broad-based decline in solar-related stocks during Wednesday’s trading session.
