VST Industries reports significant progress in sustainability amid agricultural focus and waste management goals

VST Industries Limited, a major player in the tobacco industry, has detailed its business operations and environmental commitments through its Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) for FY 2025-26. The report outlines advancements across environmental stewardship, supply chain resilience, and workforce well-being as part of the company's commitment to sustainable practices.

The company reported that Cigarettes containing tobacco form the entirety of its core business activity, with a market share of 84.8%, complemented by Unmanufactured tobacco at 15.2%. VST Industries serves markets across 26 States and 6 Union Territories in India, alongside eight international countries.

Environmental Stewardship and Resource Management

VST’s operational sustainability focuses heavily on resource efficiency and emissions reduction. In terms of energy transition, the company reported that its green power mix reached 33% of overall plant consumption, thanks to a 1.18 MW on-grid solar plant and 15 KW of newly installed solar street lighting across facilities.

Significant steps were taken in reducing operational footprint:
  • Emissions Control: Through the implementation of a DRF, AHU, and Compressor Closed Loop System, VST achieved energy savings resulting in an approximate annual reduction of 83 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Additionally, converting canteen cooking operations at the Toopran unit from LPG to PNG contributed an estimated 65 tonnes of CO2 reduction annually.
  • Water Management: The Toopran manufacturing facility maintains a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) status through its ETP and STP systems, ensuring that treated wastewater is reused for gardening and landscaping activities on site.

Supply Chain Resilience and Social Impact

The company demonstrated steady progress against long-term agricultural targets by improving farm practices among contracted farmers.
Key achievements in the supply chain include:
  • Mechanization: Field preparation has reached 100% mechanization, and 80% of contracted farmers have adopted mechanized stubble removal.
  • Farmer Welfare: Feedback from farmers confirmed a reduction in Green Tobacco Sickness cases following the increased adoption of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits provided by VST Industries.

The company's commitment to environmental responsibility extends to waste management, having implemented the 5S methodology and Red Tag system across its organization to drive waste reduction at source. The packaging transition is also noted, with a move towards 100% biodegradable BOPP overwrap and fully recyclable paper/paperboard materials.
