VP Urges Breakthrough in Cotton Ecosystem After Review of Kapas Kanti Mission​

The Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, was briefed on the strategic national effort to boost agricultural output during a high-level meeting at Uprashtrapati Bhavan today. The briefing centered on the comprehensive goals and mechanisms of the Mission for Cotton Productivity (Kapas Kanti). Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, presented the mission details alongside senior officials from both the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and the Textiles Ministry.

Key Pillars Driving India's Cotton Productivity Mission​

The briefing provided a deep dive into the three essential components designed to strengthen and revitalize India’s cotton sector. The Mission is focused on enhancing overall cotton productivity through dedicated research and the adoption of modern technology. It also seeks to ensure a steady supply of superior quality raw material for both domestic needs and international markets.

A significant component involves specialized initiatives such as KASTURI Cotton certification, which helps in guaranteeing quality standards. Furthermore, the introduction of tools like the Kisan Kapas App aims to streamline farmer engagement and knowledge dissemination. The Mission also extends beyond raw cotton, promoting new-age natural fibres to drive innovation and sustainability across the textile industry.

Vice President Stresses Need for Global Competitiveness and Timelines​

Appreciating the mission's holistic design in strengthening India’s entire cotton ecosystem, the Vice President delivered strong directives during the meeting. He particularly emphasized that time-bound approval mechanisms must be put in place immediately to accelerate innovation processes. This focus is crucial to facilitating the timely adoption of advanced agricultural technologies across farming communities.

Shri Radhakrishnan underscored the urgent necessity of improving per-acre cotton yield, setting clear and measurable targets for productivity enhancement. The Vice President stressed that India must significantly strengthen its global competitiveness while simultaneously meeting burgeoning domestic and international demands for high-quality cotton fibres.

Strategy Shift: Awareness and Market Responsiveness​

The VP also highlighted the importance of proactive strategies regarding mission dissemination and market responsiveness. He called for creating greater public awareness surrounding the goals and initiatives of the Kapas Kanti Mission among stakeholders. To ensure wider reach, he emphasized utilizing television documentaries to highlight successful projects and methods developed under the Mission framework. This multi-pronged approach aims to transition the sector towards a more advanced and competitive structure.
