Vedanta Iron & Steel Surges on Q1 Results as Demonaged Stocks See Mixed Market Reactions

The recently demerged segment of the Vedanta Group released their first set of independent earnings results for the quarter ended June 30, reflecting varying operational outcomes across the mining, steel, and power sectors. While Vedanta Iron & Steel (VISL) reported a strong increase in EBITDA driven by improved commodity prices, Vedanta Power saw profitability decline due to increased expenses. The mixed performance underscores the complex operating environment for resource-intensive companies undergoing demerger transition.

Vedanta Iron & Steel Reports Resilient Performance on Margin Improvement

Vedanta Iron and Steel (VISL), now independently listed after its separation from Vedanta Ltd., delivered a resilient operational and financial showing in Q1 FY27 despite market volatility. The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 122 cr for the quarter, a marked turnaround from a net loss of Rs 142 crore posted in the year-ago period.

Revenue from operations grew significantly by 18.32% year-on-year (YoY), reaching Rs 3,662 crore, up from Rs 3,095 crore in the corresponding quarter of the preceding fiscal year. The primary driver for this growth was a substantial 54% surge in Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) to Rs 515 crore, fueled by improved operational efficiency at both steel plants and better product realization.

The company also reported a successful restructuring of its debt profile, noting a 55% reduction in finance cost. Finance costs stood at Rs 207 crore in Q1 FY27, down from Rs 461 cr in Q1 FY26. CEO and Whole Time Director Pankaj Kumar Sharma attributed the strong margin improvement to higher iron ore production and record quarterly pig iron output.

Vedanta Power Declares Total Income After Expense Hike

Vedanta Power also marked its first earnings release as an independent entity, having been carved out from Vedanta Resources Ltd. The company reported a total income of Rs 1,844 crore in Q1 FY27, which was an increase compared to the previous fiscal quarter. However, shares saw downward movement after the results, with the stock trading nearly 4% lower at Rs 33.96 apiece following the announcement.

The company's total expenses, however, rose, rising from Rs 1,638 crore in the year-ago period to Rs 1,985 crore in Q1 FY27. This increased expense level resulted in a standalone loss of Rs 449 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, contrasting with a net profit of Rs 75 crore reported in the previous year-ago period.

Vedanta Power, which is being positioned to support India's energy needs, is actively diversifying its business model. The company has stated it is evaluating opportunities in nuclear and battery storage technology as part of a long-term plan. It aims to scale its total capacity to 20 GW and plans to commission the second 600 MW unit at its Sakti plant in the second half of FY27.

Vedanta Oil & Gas Posts Profit Despite Revenue Dip

Vedanta Oil and Gas (VOG) reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 945 crore for Q1 FY27, which represents a major recovery from a net loss of Rs 476 crore registered in the preceding fiscal year. The demerged arm saw its total revenue from operations stand at Rs 2,507 crore for the quarter under review.

This revenue figure reflected a marginal decrease of 3% Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ) when compared to the prior quarter's performance of Rs 2,588 crore. Operationally, EBITDA stood at Rs 814 crore, marking a decline of 7.7% QoQ from Rs 82 crore in Q4 FY26. The company’s EBITDA margin contracted to 32.47% in Q1 FY27 compared to 34.08% recorded in the previous quarter.

Arpit Mundra, CFO of Vedanta Oil and Gas, commented on the results, stating that the strong performance was driven by favorable commodity prices and healthy realizations. He emphasized that their continued focus on cost efficiency and value maximization allowed them to translate a supportive pricing environment into solid financials.
