SK Hynix Shares Rally Amid Escalating Union Dispute Over Stock-Linked Bonus Payouts

Deepening Negotiations Plague Chipmaker's Workforce Relations

SK Hynix is currently deep in a prolonged dispute with one of its South Korean unions regarding the structure and delivery of worker bonuses. The company and union representatives are conducting their fifth round of talks on this issue at the factory complex in Cheongju city.

The disagreement centers entirely on the lucrative bonus scheme offered by SK Hynix. Last year, the company committed to sharing 10% of its annual operating profit with all workers. This commitment suggests that in 2026, a worker could potentially receive an average payout amounting to 779 million won or $547,127, based on Reuters calculations.

Management Proposes Stock-Based Payments and Risk Sharing

The union has raised serious concerns regarding the company's proposed bonus structure. Management is pushing for a plan where more than half of the bonuses are paid out in shares. Furthermore, the proposal includes restricting workers from selling these shares for a certain period following the payout.

According to the union's internal communication, SK Hynix also intends to adjust or modify bonus payments if the company posts losses during the relevant period. The union firmly stated it "would absolutely not accept any arrangement in which union members bear the risk of stock-price fluctuations."

Union Threatens Action If Fair Proposal is Not Presented

The situation reached a critical point as the negotiation continues, with the union signaling potential escalation. Representatives stated that resolving the matter solely through dialogue would be challenging if the company fails to present a "concrete and forward-looking revised proposal" during the ongoing talks on Tuesday.

If a satisfactory proposal is not put forth by SK Hynix, the union indicated it would "take necessary action." This serves as a serious ultimatum delivered in the midst of these contentious discussions.

Stock Performance Contrasts with Internal Labor Dispute

While the internal labor relations remain tense, the stock performance of SK Hynix has seen volatility throughout the year. The company's shares have experienced significant growth, jumping more than 130% this year. However, they have simultaneously lost nearly half their value since reaching record highs in June.

An spokesperson from SK Hynix declined to comment on the ongoing dispute, and efforts to reach a response from the union were unsuccessful. The contrasting fortunes of the stock market and the labor negotiations underscore the complexity of managing internal workforce relations at such a high-growth semiconductor firm.
