Sensex, Nifty Surge Amid Global Turmoil as India’s Resilience Defies Geopolitical Instability

The Indian stock market experienced a strong surge on Wednesday, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty gaining close to 1% each. These significant rallies occurred even as global uncertainties escalated following the escalating US-Iran tensions and rising oil prices.

At 9:45 am trading, the Sensex crossed the 750 point mark, settling at the 77,500 level. Concurrently, Nifty gained over 200 points, trading comfortably above the 24,200 mark. These robust gains collectively added approximately Rs 3 lakh crore to the total market capitalization of all companies listed on BSE, pushing it up to Rs 482 lakh crore.

Market Performance and Sectoral Trends

The rally was broadly supported across the indices, though sectoral movements showed divergence. The overall market breadth turned decisively positive, with NSE recording 1,894 advances against just 641 declines, while 102 stocks remained static.

Sectorally, Nifty IT and Nifty Metal led the gains, both surging by 1 to 2%. However, Nifty Realty and Nifty Oil & Gas slipped into the red, showing increased volatility across various sectors. Broader market indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 also saw upward movement, rising up to 0.6%.

Geopolitical Instability Does Not Dampen Indian Market Momentum

Despite a sharp increase in oil prices, the market continued its ascent. This came after reports of joint strikes by the US and Saudi Arabia in Iraq and the interception of Iran's ballistic missiles aimed at US forces in the Middle East.

The volatility indicator, India VIX, dropped more than 3% to reach 12.18 despite the renewed international uncertainties. Yet, this global anxiety was offset by domestic strength, as evidenced by the market's resilience.

Key Catalysts Behind Today’s Stock Rally

Two major factors—India’s defiance against the global AI selloff and strengthening rupee gains—were highlighted as critical drivers for the rally on Dalal Street.

Resilience Against Global AI Bubble Fears

IT stocks, including Infosys and HCL Technologies, were among the top gainers, jumping up to 3%. This performance is partly attributed to India’s comparative resilience against the ongoing global AI selloff. International markets have seen considerable decline; for instance, South Korea's Kospi (which relies heavily on chipmakers) crashed around 9% today, while Japan’s Nikkei was down over 4%, and Taiwan Weighted dropped by more than 4%.

Analysts note that India has a smaller number of large listed companies directly tied to the infrastructure boom. This positioning offers resilience as global experts continue to question if massive spending by hyperscalers will ultimately yield fruit, fueling AI bubble concerns globally.

Strengthening Rupee And Currency Support

The Indian currency also drew significant support, rising 12 paise to 95.70 against the US dollar in early trade. Traders anticipate that this upward momentum is backed by expected intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, stated that the rupee is technically expected to trade within the 95.50-96.25 range in the near term. He added that "Going forward," the currency will continue to take cues from crude oil prices, the US Dollar Index, FII flows, and the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision.

Stock Leaders And Market Composition

The rally saw several blue-chip stocks perform exceptionally well. Infosys, L&T, Eternal, Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, TCS, Bajaj Finance, M&M, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Bank, and HCL Technologies were listed among the top gainers on Sensex, all rising by up to 3%.

In contrast, IndiGo shares bucked the overall trend, seeing a dip of nearly 1% as oil prices soared over 4%. The market’s combined movement underscores the mixed economic forces at play—ranging from technological shifts and global geopolitical stress to fundamental currency strength.
