SEBI Slams Paytm Leadership: CEO Sharma and CFO Deora Receive Show Cause Notice Over Loan Disclosure Timing

Digital payments giant Paytm is facing regulatory heat after its top management received a show cause notice from India's securities market regulator, SEBI. The scrutiny targets the timing of the company’s disclosure concerning the limitations placed on small personal loans following stricter guidelines issued by the central bank.

Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma and CFO Madhur Deora are the key personnel who have been served the directive. They now have a strict 14-day window to submit their response in relation to the notice.

Regulatory Scrutiny Over Loan Disclosure Timing

The regulatory inquiry focuses on the company’s announcement made on December 6, 2023. On that date, Paytm stated it would be limiting the issuance of personal loans below ₹50,000 (approximately $525). This action was taken in response to new tighter regulations issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) concerning consumer lending practices.

The RBI had previously tightened rules for small-value personal loans through increased capital requirements. These measures were put in place amid ongoing concerns regarding a surge in the provision of these smaller loans across the industry. Paytm's share price saw a reaction following this announcement, dropping by 20 per cent on the next trading day.

Market Reaction and Stock Performance Trends

The market has seen varied reactions surrounding Paytm's operational changes. Prior to the December 6 disclosure, which led to significant volatility, company shares dropped by about 12 per cent over the preceding eight days.

In contrast, when the RBI tightened its rules approximately three weeks before the announcement, Paytm’s stock fell around 1.9 per cent after the regulatory action was announced. The share experienced some recovery in the subsequent days following that initial order.

Company Stance and Potential Penalties

On Wednesday, Paytm released a statement assuring stakeholders that the company does not anticipate any financial impact resulting from the SEBI show cause notice.

A show cause notice issued by SEBI is intended to elicit responses from accused entities and individuals during an ongoing probe. If the findings are upheld by the regulator, the involved persons and entities could face potential restrictions or monetary penalties under Indian securities regulations.
