Rupee Surges as Geopolitical Tensions Ease: Local Currency Gains Most Since May After Brent Crude Plummets
The Rupie's Comeback and Current Trading Levels
The Indian rupee experienced a significant rally on July 27, logging its biggest gain since May. It opened 41 paise higher, trading at Rs 96.15 per dollar. This marked an improvement from the previous session, when it was valued at Rs 96.56 per dollar. The local currency's strengthening is directly linked to the easing of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. The agreement by both nations to pause military strikes has helped stabilize global markets.
Brent Crude Plummets Following Ceasefire Talks
Brent crude prices saw a substantial decline, falling nearly 4 percent. They traded near $93 per barrel following the diplomatic accord. This development contrasts sharply with last week, when oil prices were hovering slightly above the $100 per barrel mark and had reached nearly a six-week high. The mutual agreement to pause attacks is aimed at finding a diplomatic solution between both countries. Furthermore, the talks are intended to open up the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital energy route.
Market Support and Reserve Bank's Role
Market stability was supported by potential dollar sales conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday. These actions likely helped prevent the rupee from breaching another record low. At one point during trading, the rupee had dropped as much as Rs 96.86 per dollar before managing to curtail its losses. The RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, noted in a media interview that approximately $32 billion has been garnered through foreign currency non-resident bank (FCNR-B) deposits. Last week, the FCNR-B deposit inflows were reported at $17 billion.
Expert View on Rupee's Outlook and Support Levels
Analysts maintain a critical view regarding the rupee’s future direction. Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex Advisors, stated that their perspective remains unchanged: "The rupee weakens, and it has, all the way to Rs 96.50."He clarified that only genuine peace talk headlines possess enough power to facilitate a rescue, estimating this relief effort to be worth around 30 to 50 paisa. For the time being, he suggested support levels for the rupee are situated between Rs 95.90 and Rs 96.00.
