Rupee Surges Above ₹96 Mark as RBI Intervention and Global Oil Price Plunge Ignite Rally

Indian Rupee Strengthens Amid Softening Crude Oil Prices

The Indian rupee opened substantially stronger on Monday, gaining about 70 paise and trading at 95.76 per dollar against the previous level of Rs 95.91. This movement represents a notable improvement for the local currency in six weeks. Traders attribute this significant appreciation to a confluence of factors involving global commodity trends and likely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The rupee managing to breach the Rs 96 per dollar threshold is viewed positively by market participants, suggesting a stabilization effort. This move comes even as global oil prices are cooling down, which typically puts pressure on currency valuations.

RBI Intervention and Forex Inflows Drive Currency Appreciation

Market sentiment suggests that the RBI was likely active in the spot market, selling dollars to mitigate sharper depreciation. The intervention aimed to prevent the rupee from falling beyond Rs 97 per dollar for the first time. Any further actions by the central bank during the day are being closely monitored by traders.

Finrex Treasury Advisors analysts highlighted the combination of a sharp fall in crude oil prices and RBI support as key drivers. They noted that the currency has managed to retract despite dollar buying from importers and oil companies. Positivity generated from foreign currency non-resident bank (FCNR-B) deposits inflows also contributed significantly to this rally.

Global Markets React to Oil Price Decline and Geopolitical Pauses

Globally, Brent crude prices saw a downturn, trading 1 percent lower at nearly $87 per barrel. This oil price softening is linked to the news that the United States and Iran had agreed to pause hostilities in order to discuss a diplomatic solution.

The anticipated inflow of almost $32 billion through FCNR-B deposits further bolstered investor sentiment toward the Indian currency. The collective support from reduced global commodity prices, central bank action, and strong deposit inflows is underpinning the rupee's current strength.
