Rupee Plummets as Global Instability Rocks Markets; RBI Intervention Battles Forex Pressure

The Indian rupee faced significant pressure in foreign exchange markets on Tuesday, trading at 95.38 against the US dollar amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia. The currency saw a decline of 8 paise early in trade. This movement comes as concerns over the ongoing instability and fading hopes for a regional deal maintain caution across global commodity markets.

The rupee settled at 95.30 against the US dollar on Monday, showing continued volatility despite the domestic market's weaknesses. The downside was reportedly contained by concerted intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). State-run banks were noted to be selling dollars on the central bank's behalf, helping stabilize the currency value.

Forex Dynamics and Crude Oil Turbulence

Global markets remain tense as uncertainty persists surrounding the Strait of Hormuz involving Iran and the US. Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, has surged past USD 87 per barrel, according to experts in the treasury advisory sector.

The dollar index was recorded trading at 99.77, registering a slight decline of 0.04 percent. Meanwhile, futures trade showed Brent oil dipping slightly by 0.06 percent at USD 87.67 per barrel. This turmoil underscores how geopolitical friction continues to impact commodity pricing globally.

Equity Markets React Amid Global Headwinds

Domestic equity markets registered a downturn in early trading. The Sensex declined by 320.14 points, settling at 78,204.40. The Nifty also faced pressure, falling 94.35 points to reach 24,490.85.

Despite the market decline, foreign institutional investors provided a stabilizing element on Monday. Exchange data indicated that FIIs purchased equities worth Rs 1,974.76 crore on a net basis, offering some support against the prevailing forex instability.
