India Stresses Energy Security Amid Global Tensions at Bharat Electricity Summit 2026

Centre Calls for Coordinated Power Sector Efforts Across States

New Delhi, March 20: Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Friday underscored the critical importance of energy security as geopolitical tensions continue to impact global energy dynamics.

Speaking at a ministerial meeting during the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, the minister highlighted the need for stronger coordination between the Centre and state governments to ensure affordable, efficient, and reliable power generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.

Push for Higher Energy Consumption and Renewable Transition

Emphasizing long-term energy resilience, Lal called for efforts to increase per capita energy consumption while accelerating India’s transition toward renewable energy sources.

According to a statement from the power ministry, the minister stressed that strengthening energy infrastructure and scaling clean energy adoption remain essential in navigating global uncertainties.

Nuclear Energy and SHANTI Act Highlighted

The minister also pointed to the potential of nuclear energy as a clean and sustainable power source. He described the SHANTI Act as a significant policy step aimed at supporting India’s evolving energy landscape.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik co-chaired the meeting.

Key Power Sector Reports Released

During the summit, Lal released two key reports evaluating the performance of power distribution companies:

Consumer Service Ratings of DISCOMS Report (CSRD)

The CSRD report assesses the performance of DISCOMs in delivering consumer services. It sets baseline standards across critical areas such as accurate metering and billing, timely grievance redressal, and transparent tariff practices.

Distribution Utilities Ranking Report (DUR) FY 2024-25

The DUR report provides a comprehensive evaluation of power distribution utilities across India. It adopts a multi-dimensional framework that goes beyond traditional metrics, covering institutional capability, financial sustainability, operational efficiency, and service delivery outcomes.

The findings aim to offer a clearer picture of the sector’s performance and support ongoing improvements in India’s power distribution ecosystem.
