Company Clarifies Reports on Lithium-Ion Battery Cell Strategy
Reliance Industries on Monday said its plans to build a comprehensive battery storage manufacturing ecosystem remain unchanged and are progressing in line with internal timelines. The clarification came in response to reports suggesting that the company had paused its lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing plans in India.A company spokesperson stated that there has been no change in Reliance’s strategy to create a world-leading battery storage manufacturing ecosystem, covering the entire value chain from cells to containerised energy storage systems.
Battery Cell Manufacturing Targeted to Begin in 2026
Reliance had earlier indicated 2026 as the target year to begin battery cell manufacturing. The company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, had told shareholders last year that the battery giga factory would commence operations in 2026 with an initial capacity of 40 GWh per year. The facility is planned to scale up modularly to 100 GWh per year over time. The spokesperson added that updates on the group’s new energy business, including battery initiatives, have been consistently shared during quarterly investor calls. The next update is expected during the third-quarter earnings call scheduled for January 16.
Energy Storage Ecosystem Progressing Across Segments
Reliance reiterated that Battery Energy Storage System manufacturing, battery pack manufacturing, and cell manufacturing have always been integral parts of its energy storage plans. The company said execution across these segments is progressing as previously outlined.Battery Energy Storage Systems play a critical role in storing electricity for later use and are essential for grid stability, renewable energy integration, and backup power solutions across residential, industrial, and utility applications.
Jamnagar to Host Integrated Green Energy Manufacturing Hub
Reliance has committed ₹75,000 crore to establish an integrated manufacturing ecosystem for the solar value chain, battery energy storage systems, and electrolysers at Jamnagar. The facilities are being developed at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Manufacturing Complex, which the company describes as a large, modern, modular, and integrated manufacturing ecosystem housed at a single location.Construction has already begun on an advanced chemical battery manufacturing facility at Jamnagar with an annual capacity of 30 GWh.
Focus on Sodium-Ion and Lithium-Ion Technologies
Alongside lithium-ion batteries, Reliance is advancing sodium-ion battery technology, which is suitable for stationary storage and two-wheeler applications due to the widespread availability of sodium. For lithium-ion batteries used in higher-performance automotive applications, Reliance draws on expertise from its US subsidiary Lithium Werks and its UK-based subsidiary Faradion, both of which have experience in lithium-iron-phosphate battery technologies. The company reiterated that all elements of its battery and energy storage roadmap remain on track as part of its broader clean energy transition strategy.
