RBI Sets Redemption Price for Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB 2018-19); Investors Lock in Market Valuation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released crucial details regarding the premature redemption process for holders of the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2018-19 Series VI. This notification provides clarity on the pricing mechanism and upcoming due dates for these long-term gold instruments.

SGB Redemption Eligibility and Timeline

Premature redemption of the SGB 2018-19 Series VI is now permissible, provided the terms stipulated in the GOI notification dated October 08, 2018 are met. The scheme allows bondholders to redeem their bonds after completing five years from the initial issue date.

The next scheduled due date for premature redemption of this specific tranche has been set for August 12, 2026. This timeline allows investors who have held these gold-backed instruments past the eligibility threshold to plan their exit strategy.

How is the SGB Redemption Price Determined?

To ensure transparency and consistency, the RBI has standardized how the redemption price will be calculated. The valuation for the SGB is tied directly to the market movements of refined gold.

The redemption price must be based on the simple average of the closing price of 999 purity gold. This crucial figure must be sourced from data published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA). This methodology grounds the bond's value firmly in commodity prices at the time of redemption.

Official Redemption Price Announced for SGB Series VI

Based on the prescribed mechanism, the official redemption price for premature withdrawal has been finalized. This valuation reflects the average performance of gold over a recent period leading up to the announced date.

As of August 11, 2026, the redemption price set by RBI is ₹ 15,102/- (Rupees Fifteen Thousand One Hundred and Two Only) per unit of SGB. This rate is determined using the simple average of the closing prices recorded on three business days: August 07, August 10, and August 11, 2026.
