The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a significant leadership appointment within its statistical division. Shri Ravi Shankar has been appointed as the Executive Director (ED), effective from July 1, 2026. This move places immense trust in his vast experience across various financial markets and data management processes.

Shri Shankar takes on the crucial role of Executive Director at the Bank. In this capacity, he will be responsible for overseeing the Department of Statistics and Information Management. His elevation comes after a distinguished tenure within the institution itself.

Prior to his promotion, Shri Shankar was serving as the Adviser-In-Charge of the Department of Statistics and Information Management. This transition highlights the RBI's commitment to leveraging internal expertise in critical data functions.

Shri Ravi Shankar possesses an extensive background spanning over three decades within the Reserve Bank. His career has provided him with deep exposure across numerous specialized areas of central banking.

His work portfolio includes corporate and banking statistics, government securities market management, and settlement systems. Furthermore, he gained significant experience in debt management and various surveys conducted by the RBI.

As a seasoned banker, Shri Shankar has served as a key member on several high-profile committees and working groups. These roles focused specifically on macroeconomic statistics and complex policy issues.

Focus on Statistics and Information Management​

In his new capacity, Shri Shankar will drive the strategic direction of the Department of Statistics and Information Management. His leadership is expected to refine how the RBI collects and processes vital economic data for policy formulation.

Academically, Shri Ravi Shankar holds a Master's Degree in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University. He also possesses a Diploma in Development Policy and Planning from the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. Additionally, he is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (CAIIB).
