RBI Announces Premature Redemption Price for Sovereign Gold Bonds as Market Looks Ahead

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has provided crucial details regarding the premature redemption price for specific tranches of its Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) scheme. This decision, effective August 10, 2026, outlines the valuation method and final rate for investors who wish to redeem their bonds prematurely.

Redemption Eligibility Rules Established by RBI

The RBI confirmed that premature redemption is now permissible under certain conditions for SGB 2019-20 Series IX and SGB 2020-21 Series V. These tranches are governed by notifications issued by the Government of India (GOI) dated September 30, 2019, and April 13, 2020.

According to RBI guidelines, premature redemption may be conducted after the completion of five years from the original issue date of the respective Gold Bond. The next due date for this form of early redemption for these specific tranches has been set for August 11, 2026.

Valuation Basis for SGB Redemption Price

The valuation process for premature redemption is standardized to ensure transparency and fairness for bond holders. The RBI specified that the redemption price will be determined based on a simple average of the closing price of gold purity 999. This calculation must be performed over the previous three business days preceding the redemption date.

The data required for this valuation comes from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA). The adherence to this methodology ensures that the bond holder receives a value aligned with market benchmarks set by the industry body.

Final Redemption Price Released as ₹ 14,957/- Per Unit

Based on the simple average of the closing price of gold across three business days, the RBI has announced the specific redemption price for these SGB units due on August 11, 2026. The determined redemption price stands at ₹ 14,957/- per unit.

This rate reflects the averaged performance of the underlying commodity over the designated period (August 06, August 07, and August 10, 2026). This comprehensive notification provides clarity on how investors can access their funds under the terms of the SGB scheme before maturity.
